8 wk old not settling for sleep
« on: January 23, 2013, 21:40:03 pm »
Sleep is already a battle with my 8 Week old.  As soon as I begin the 4 S's she starts to cry.  The crying only gets worse once she is swaddled.  She will cry and thrash around while we are sitting and holding her up right.  I try to shush-pat her but she continues to cry loudly.  This can go on for an hour before she is exhausted and falls asleep on my shoulder.  I can then lay her in the bassinet in our room and she will usually sleep 6 + hours.  I would like to be able to lay her down in the crib drowsy and let her fall asleep on her own. Any suggestions on how we get to this point?  Thanks for your help!

Hi there! At just 8 weeks your LO is so tiny, don't worry about some AP along the way. After she is 3 months or so you can focus more on sleep training. I understand wanting to start as you go on but let her fall asleep in your arms if you like, just get her some rest however you can. How long is she staying awake? She sounds as if she might be a bit OT. At this age he probably can't handle more than about an hour and 15 minutes or so, eyes open to eyes shut, of course. What you are doing sounds like a good start for when she is ready for a bit more sleep training. Just to be sure, does she have any signs of reflux?

Maybe these links could help?

Thank you for your quick response.  She stays awake for about an 1- 1.5 hours during the day before napping but has a hard time napping in the evening.  Last night she went 3 hours before taking a quick 20 min nap after nursing.  She loves to nap in the swing during the day but it does not work in the evening.  She is probably OT when we put her down for the night but I am unsure how to get her to take a nap in the evening.
