5.5 month old bedtime problems.. Please help!!
« on: January 29, 2013, 03:26:42 am »
Hi,

We have a 5.5 month old son who has been on the EASY routine since he was about a month old. He has never been a really good sleeper but is slowly getting better. On Christmas he gave us a miracle and started sleeping through the night! He will occasionally wake up a few nights a week and & I go in and give him his paci & he will go back to sleep.

My problem is he doesn't nap really well. He was taking a long morning nap but he now it is getting shorter so I'm not sure if he UT. It seems as much as I try to keep to some sort of nap schedule it goes haywire. He is very inconsistent day to day. I never know which nap of the day will be longer and it seems lately they are all 45 minute naps & he can't settle himself again.

It's past month he has gotten cranky throughout the day whether he naps well or not. And now during our bedtime routine he screams for about an hour until I can finally calm him down so he can take his bottle. I think he is just overtired by then & can't shut down. I'm not sure what to do at this point. He's our second child & I feel clueless!

Here is a sample of our EASY routine:
Wake up- 7:00
E 7:00
A
S 8:15-10:15 (sometimes will wake up at 9 & won't go back down to sleep)

E 10:15
A
S 12:15- 1:30

E 2:00
A
S 3:30-4:15 (can't seem to extend this nap)

E 6:00
A
Bedtime 8:00 with bottle (screams for about an hour during bedtime routine)

Should his A time be a lot longer? Should he be on 2 naps instead of 3?

Thank you so much for your help.

I'd say UT for the first nap - at his age he should be able to handle at least 2h and probably needs more. The longer naps are likely catch ups from the days of short naps.  Don't jump straight to 2h - just add 10 mins to his A time every 3-4 days until you get there.  It's common to get a few OT naps while he adjusts.  I'd also bring BT earlier to 7pm aiming for a 12h day.

After a short nap he will probably need a slightly shorter A time so he doesn't get OT - watch him carefully for cues.

Is he an independent sleeper?

You're also headed towards 3-2 territory in the next few weeks - some great information here: All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months
