9.5 mo, suddenly NW and EW
« on: February 04, 2013, 13:10:49 pm »
Hi All,

My 9.5 mo DS was a great sleeper for about 3 weeks.  We got into a great pattern of good daytime naps and he's sleep at night for 12-13 hours straight.  It was glorious.  However, he is suddenly back to waking once a night and/or waking early, and I'm not sure why.  He'll take a 4 oz bottle when he wakes at night, so I've tried making him bigger bottles during the day but he won't drink any more during the day.  I'm thinking he may need an increase in A time or shorter naps during the day or more A time before BT... let me know what you think.  Here was our routine yesterday:

BT/S 8pm (this was a bit late for us, but he had taken an afternoon nap that lasted until 5:30pm)
WU 5:30 am - 4oz bottle
S 6 - 8:20am
E 8:30, nurse
A
E 9:30, fruit
A
E 10:45, 6 oz bottle
S 11:30 - 1pm (I woke him up at this point)
A
E 1:30pm, oatmeal + other solids
A
E 3:30pm 6oz bottle
S 4 - 5pm
A
E 5:30, veggie, cereal
A
E 7:15pm, 8 oz bottle
BT/S 7:30pm
WU 10:30pm -- he cried/fussed for a few min but managed to get himself back to sleep
S
WU 5:30 -- he fussed for half an hour before all out crying
E 6am, nurse, then back to bed
S ... it is now 7am and I think he just fell back to sleep

What do you think?  He would routinely sleep in til 8am when he was STTN, then take a long nap around 11 and a short nap around 3:30.  If I start extending his A times more, that pushes his last nap pretty late.  I could start waking him earlier in the morning or pushing his BT later to get more waking hours.  I think he is also teething, but medicating before bed doesn't seem to help with the EW.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My thought is that you're probably in the very beginnings of the 2-1 nap switch.  Have you read this? 10 to 12 mth old Sleep Gone Wonky, and the 2 - 1 Nap Switch

It gives some good information.  I'd probably think about further capping that second nap and just focus on getting him to bedtime without getting too OT.  What do you think?

Thanks! I was wondering if it might be the 2-1 nap switch.  I'm also more convinced after today that he's got some discomfort from teething, so that may be complicating things.

Today our sleep schedule was

WU 5:30am (EW)
E 6am  then back to bed
S 7 - 9:25am
Nap 1 -- 12:20 - 1:10pm
Nap 2 -- 4 - 4:45pm
BT 7:30pm

Pretty wonky day for us.  I thought that if he took a long midday nap (like he usually does) then I'd just skip the evening nap, but he did not.  I think the teething pain probably woke him early from his first nap.  I think I may be letting him sleep too much during the day... I just have such a hard time waking him whenever he is sleeping (I think because we've had a lot of sleeping issues in the past...).  Anyway, I guess we'll see how tonight goes and hopefully that tooth will come in soon.  And I'll read up on the 2-1 transition.

Thank you!

Definitely a wonky day!  I'm at the point now with my toddler where if he sleeps too much during the day, he's up partying at night -- which is hard because he was always a terrible napper so I hate having to wake him too.  When you have a more "normal" day, I'd definitely think about capping the second nap -- and maybe trying some meds for teeth too (if nothing else, it helps you rule out teething pain as a cause for the wakings).
