12 weeks old - when to stop feeding at night
« on: February 04, 2013, 22:22:47 pm »
Hello!

I am a first time mom to my daughter who is 12 weeks old.

In my opinion, she's been a pretty good sleeper.  She's usually sleeping by 8:30/9 with 1 or 2 NW.  We are up for the day at 6/6:30.  My question is, should I be feeding her at every NW still, or should I be trying to shush/pat her to sleep?  (And how do you do that when they sleep on their backs?)

For more detail:
We start our bedtime routine at 8pm.  I usually suck the snot out of her nose, zip her up into her halo sleep sack, turn on her Jewell CD, and feed her in her room.  (She will only take about 3.5 oz at a time.)

Usually by 8:30/8:45 she has fallen asleep and I put her in her bassinet by my bed.  She will wake up and fuss a little before falling back to sleep.  We do keep white noise going all night long - a rain storm.

Then, she might waken once at around 3-3:30, or twice at 12am and 3am.  I usually let her fuss for 15-20 minutes until she starts crying before I pick her up, take her out to make her bottle.  Then, we go back into her room to eat and rock back to sleep.  A usual NW lasts 20-30 minutes for us.  At night she might take anywhere from 2 - 4 oz.

She does not use a pacifier at night.  I've tried, but it won't stay in her mouth, and then she wakes up mad for it.

I can provide more details if that would help!

I really appreciate any help!!!

Thanks,
Chloe's Mom

Hi there!
At her age it's still normal to feed twice at night. Is she going down straight after the feed or it's difficult?
Is there a reason that BT is a bit late? Usually one aims for a 12h day, so if she wakes up at 6:30, you'd aim that to be her BT as well, or more like 19. But of course, it's your choice, if things are not broken, don't fix them ;).

I'd agree - at that age I'd be feeding at any night waking more than 3h since the last feed.  You could shh pat at any other wakings :)

Thanks for the replies!  That's what I wanted to hear!

We don't have an issue going back to sleep after a night feeding, so everything is good!  She did awesome last night, and only woke up once for me.

I didn't know about the '12 hours up' guideline.  I start getting her to bed about 7:30 usually, but she doesn't actually get to her bed until between 8:30 or 9.  We don't seem to have much of an issue, and she doesn't have to get up at 6:30, but that's when she usually starts crying to get up.

Thanks!!
