My DS is 5.5mths old. He had been on a text book 4 hour EASY, and was sleeping from 730/8 until 4 or 5am then having a feed and sleeping again till 7.
It was so great up until he started teething about 3 weeks ago... he has 2 teeth now! But I can't get the night wakings to stop. While he was teething he was waking up every 2 hours in the night, but would go back to sleep with some coaxing and support and occasionally pu/pd, which we just started doing a little over a week ago, (he didn't always cry enough to warrant doing it at every wake). Now teething (for now) is done, but he continues to wake.
We live in a apartment so it's a bit more stressful when he wakes up crying every couple of hours since we know he's also waking neighbors. He has been sleeping in our room this whole time, but in his own crib (as per our Health Canada recc. to keep baby close by until 6 mths when the highest risk of SIDS has passed). So we moved his crib into his own room 5 days ago (none of our neighbors sleep on that side, so much less stressful for me knowing that it's just us he's waking up). He slept great the first night, second night took a bit to get him back down. But now he's back to waking every 2-3 hours. He goes to sleep initially just fine and always has. Only once in a while when his mouth is bugging does he fuss for a bit before sleeping.
I have read on another sleep training method is when they start to cry on the first night you wait 5 minutes then go in, the next night 10 minutes and so forth. I'm not really willing to wait longer than that, I'm huge on not breaking the trust with him, that would break my heart. But at the same time I need to sleep! And really, so does he!
I'm curious to get peoples thoughts on trying that but then going in and proceeding with the normal pu/pd routine (placing hand on chest and trying to console that way first before actually pu/pd). It just seems like he's crying out more for attention. As soon as one of us goes in and puts a hand on his chest to calm him, he's out like a light again in under a minute. A few times it has been b/c he's kicked off his blankets and is cold, so we're going to go get a sleep sack today to see if that helps.
