extending nap time- for how long???
« on: February 05, 2013, 14:47:02 pm »
Hello everyone,

I've just started extending my babies naps. Before it was 30 min at best. Now I put him back to sleep after that time but he wakes and does mantra cry every 10-20 mins. I know it;s just the begining but will he stop waking so much eventually?. I'm also not sure for how long should I be doing it. Is a 1h 30 min nap ok? When I picked him up after that time he was quite fussy... How should I know if it's enough?

Thank you for answer!

A restorative nap is at least 2 sleep cycles, which for most babies is 1hr30 - so that's a good nap length. If he sleeps longer, great, but I wouldn't try to resettle after that.

How old is your LO? Little babies often jolt awake in the first 10-20 mins - is he swaddled? Also, if he's a bit OT, it will be harder for him to settle and stay asleep. Can you post your routine for us?

My LO is almost 5 months old and he has never slept for more than 30 mins.
When I see he's tired (rubs his eyes), usually 2 hrs after waking up, I breastfeed him (I konw I shouldn't but I had some lactation problems and I wasn't sure if he was getting enough milk, and also I want to be sure he's not crying because of being hungry, and also I want him to get enough milk during the day so that he doesn't wake up every 2 hrs at night, and the last but not least I don't want him to wake up after those 30 mins just because he's hungry again- he eats every 2 hrs). Anyway, I feed him, than I close the curtains, play white noise, put him in his cot, lie my hand in his chest, also holding his arms. With another hand I tickle his forehead, but just for a while, than I stop. He falls asleep snuggling his head in a bug pillow that I put next to him. Than I let him go.
He wakes after 30 mins, so I resettle him the same way. The next 30 mins is a constant waking up-resettling proces, and the last 30 mins he sleeps calmly. Does it even make sense? Will it get better? (I mean constant sleep)
I don;t know if he is overtires, because we're just begining...
Thank you so much for the support!

Just one more question. Can his sleep cycle be 30 mins? In that case 1 hour would be enough...
