Hydration vs food. Neocate
« on: January 30, 2013, 06:50:37 am »
T doesn't drink much, and he is spilling a lot which is a concern ATM but I'm really wanting to ask about nutrients vs hydration. I'm not sure if this is the right board.

It's pretty hot out ATM, T sweats a lot and his Fontanelle is often low. But he has wet nappies and is gaining weight.

He drinks between 90-120 mls every 3-3.5 hrs sometimes less if he drinks very little or spills a lot. He will spill between 20-40 mls I think between feeds. I have heard neocate is absorbed so quick into the body that even if spilling the LO gets the nutrients...but hydration ???

I'm giving cooled boiled water sometimes in a syringe but not a lot :-\

I don't know that water is a great idea hun.. he is quite young still and it could cause an electrolyte imbalance... a sunken fonatelle is a sign of more serious dehydration but if he is still making wet diapers, I wouldn't be too concerned...

How about syringing a bit of Neocate into him?  You can give things like Pedialyte past 3 months but given that he is spilly, I would stick to the formula...

Lemme see if I can find us a nurse around here ;)

Hmm, did the doc say how much water was OK to give?  It's been a while since Mouse was that little, and it wasn't quite as hot when she was.  KWIM?
Digging a bit I found that it normally sinks somewhat when babe is more upright.  If OK when he is laying down, no worries.  Also found this:
sunken soft spot

here they say that it's fine to give a little bit of water to babies in between feeds when it is really hot outside.

another question - how are his poos?

Ahhh jenn interesting. T is often upright because of the reflux. Thanks for the link.good to know its not so important now. We aren't able to see the ped again for 4 weeks or so :(

Our latest dr visit she said the same a you re fontenelle not a good indicator. His nappies ok and just gaining so she said not to worry too much re hydration and keep offing 5mls water if needed between feeds.

Ah yes, the swamp poo.  My sympathies.  ;)
