When hiccups get in the way.....
« on: February 15, 2013, 21:40:02 pm »
In the  sleep interview with Tracy she stated that if your lo wakes from a short nap you can top them off and if they are falling asleep at the breast/bottle to keep them 10min (30-45 if they're wide awake) and  try to get them back to sleep.....well, my  lo woke at the 35 min mark and she was obviously tired but awake enough to  smile at me.  As hard as it was for me not to crack up, I kept my composure and realized she was giving hunger cues (GS) so I fed her and she was falling asleep at the breast so I sat with her for 5min and changed her diaper then right back to her crib.  I said my  normal nap time things and walked  out, as usual... Now she WOULD'VE fallen asleep in 5-10 min but she got these silly hiccups and it turned into a 40 MINUTE HICCUP DISASTER!!!!!  Oh my goodness, she was able to soothe pretty well afterwards (with some of moms help in the process) but she ended  up being awake for  2 hours after this 35 min nap.  According to what  Tracy's interview says, I am to go in  and wake her up?...or do I let her sleep?... I'm a bit confused.  Is that "method" only  used in certain circumstances?...like sleep training or extending naps?  She can self-sooth when I get her down at a decent time and she doesn't FTS, so do I just let her sleep and make up so I don't have an OT baby?   ??? :P

Oh I used to get SO frustrated when my LO would start hiccuping just as she was about to fall asleep! ::) How old is your LO?

If my LO went down late for some reason, I didn't wake her at the time she would usually wake - especially if OT, I would let her sleep! EAS is a flexible routine, so your timings don't have to be the same every day ;)

Just FYI, hiccups can be a sign of ot - weird, I know! I found that my dd1 went through a phase of getting hiccups every time I was just trying to put her down for a nap and it was really frustrating and I cut her a time a little and it stopped. If it does start happening more often then you might like to think about shaving 5 mins off her a time to see if it helps.

I don't know how old ur LO is and if u br or bottle feed. My dd is 14 weeks and for months now I just put her to the boob when she has the hiccups and her drinking for a minute or two always takes them away. Hth!

Gtk, I would've never even thought of that! Will  keep that in mind.

When I was little my mom had the miracle way to get rid of hiccups and  it works wonders on my 6yr old....she'd give us water and we'd sip it and after every sip/swallow, we'd say "glory".....7 times.....works every time!!  So I assumed that same method would work for my lo and it has worked  in the past but I didn't want to feed  her so close to sleep.... oh boy...   ::)   I knew you would understand!  :)
