When to go from 3 - 4 milk feeds?
« on: February 25, 2013, 16:45:49 pm »
hi There,

My lo is 7M old, BF, with 3 solid meals. He's been on solids since 5 months old (showed keen interest and loves the stuff  ;)), and recently dropped the DF (was giving him 3-4oz formula, dropped it 3 weeks ago after he refused it for several nights in a row). He eats solids verywell, and seems to BF well, but this last week, his afternoon feed is getting later and later as he doesn't seem hungry and now he's started spitting up some of his lunch at that feed too, so I'm wondering if he's getting ready to drop a BF, I know it's young, but his sister did the same at his age (although she was on bottles by the time she went to 3 feeds at 8 months).

Here's our day:

5am BF (doesn't seem to be able to old out longer, genuinely hungry at this time, but feel it will get later in due course, even with DF he woke at this time/ earlier), then dozes until
6.45 up
7.30am breakfast
10.45 BF
11.45/12 Lunch
3pm BF - but now it's closer to 4pm!
5pm dinner
6.30pm BF
7pm bed  :)

My question is, do you think this might be signs he's ready to move to 3 BF, and if so, how do I transition, do I just gradually wean off the midmorning feed by feeding for less time?

Advice much appreaciated,

thanks

Hi there!
Current advice (per the WHO I believe) is to stick with 4 BFs until a year (or close to it) and instead limit solids if that's interfering with milk intake.

HTH!
