Suddenly waking again at 24 weeks?
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:03:20 pm »
DD will be 6 months old on Thursday.  Last Monday night, she began waking once a night on some night again, after having slept 7:30-7:30 with only a DF since the beginning of January.  On the nights she is up and won't go back down with a few minute of PU/PD, I have been treating it as hunger and feeding her a 4 oz bottle.  Does the trick every time!  I felt good about this last week because she was also eating WAY more during the day and I thought, "Okay, major growth spurt!"  Then she slept through again on Saturday and Sunday; I thought we were past it, but she was up again at 4:45 this AM wanting to eat!  Any ideas?

Here is background info:
DD is fine as far as size - she was 17 pounds when we went to the doctor for an eye infection on February 2.  We have been following EASY since she was born.  She is formula fed.  Typically, she eats 32-36 ounces a day.  For the last week, it's been more like 36-46 during this growth spurt!  We've been offering her extra bottles during activity time and she's been happy to eat them.  She sleeps in a crib in her own room with darkness and white noise and she is swaddled in a Woombie.  Since the beginning of February, she has dropped the catnap and is doing fine with it.  (Two days that she woke early from a nap we did squeeze in the catnap and it worked just fine.)  She has recently extended her afternoon wake time to 3 hours.  I am wary of overtiredness but it seems fine.  We watch her carefully for sleepy signs.

Here is our normal EASY:
7:30 = Wake up and eat 8 ounces, followed by playtime (She usually just wants to play, so we'll convince her to take about half the bottle and then she'll have the other half after a bit of playtime, usually around 8:30 or 9:00)
10:00-noon = Nap
Noon = Wake up and eat 8 ounces, followed by playtime
3:00-4:30 = Nap
4:30 = Wake up and eat 6 ounces, followed by playtime
6:15 = Just last week, I started feeding her a puree at this time.  She can take it or leave it.
7:00 = Eat 8 ounces and get ready for bed
7:45 = Bedtime!
10:30 = Dreamfeed, at which we can usually get 4-6 ounces into her.

During our growth spurt, she has been taking an extra 4-6 ounces around 2:00 or 2:30 PM.  She has also been taking more like 10 ounces at bedtime.  Then, some nights she has had an additional 4 ounces at some point during the night (all random times.)

Is this due to introducing solids?  Or should I be doing MORE solids so she isn't hungry in the night?  (I can easily have our nanny add an afternoon solid feeding, or I can do it when I get home from work at 2:30.)  Or have my 4 nights (not consecutive) of feeding her during this growth spurt created a bad habit?

It could be the solids -- sometimes just the feeling of them moving through their digestive tracts can cause them to wake -- if nothing else, I might try doing them in the morning only for a few days and see if it has any impact on your wakings.

Your routine looks pretty solid, I can't think of anything you might tweak -- with regards to the night bottles, it doesn't sound like the necessarily needs it since she's been taking less at night than her daytime feedings.  I'd probably try to resettle without feeding and see where it gets you.

What a good point about solids moving through her system!  I will do solids this evening because she hasn't had them yet today, and then tomorrow begin doing it during her AM activity time.  Husband is home with her tomorrow and he'll be happy to help.  :o)  Our sitter also said she'd be happy to do some solids with DD in the afternoon.

I couldn't think of anything with our routine to tweak, either!  She is somewhere between an angel and textbook baby, and as long as we stay on routine and don't try to put her down under- or over-tired, she is such a happy baby.

I did try PU/PD for about 30 minutes at 4:45 AM today before I fed her.  It seriously NEVER takes that long so after a while I just assumed there was an issue other than just being awake.  If she's up again tonight, I'll try it again before feeding her.  Last night, it just made her angrier!

Could also be a growth spurt -- there is one at 6 months.  As they get older, there seems to be quite a variation on how it affects them -- with my older two, I never noticed a GS after 4 months, but ds had monster ones at both 5 and 6 months.
