10 month old still waking up all night
« on: March 19, 2013, 09:35:42 am »
Hello everyone,

I have a 10 month old (almost 11 months) who has been having sleep problems since birth.  I have been sleep training since he was 9 weeks old and have made zero progress.  I have been posting on the PUPD thread but they've asked me to post here to see if fresh eyes might be able to help me.

He is an awfully unsettled baby, but we've seen 18 different doctors and none of them has found any medical reason for his sleep problems, although he did have reflux when he was younger (his medication never helped his sleep anyway).   I put him down awake at bedtime and naps, he usually does a lap of the crib and then lays himself down and goes to sleep, and at least 1-2 times a night he wakes and settles himself.  Sometimes he only wakes 2 times a night and has a fairly easy settle and the rest of the time he has horrible nights where he's up and down all night long.  Example Sunday night he went down at 7:00 and woke at 11:15 and 3:45 and was easily settle each time and he was up for the day at 6.  Last night he went to bed at 7:30 and was up at 8, 9, 10, 11 12-2:30, and up for the day at 5.  What was different? I have no idea, but unfortunately the later night is more common.  He occasionally stays overnight at grandmas and he always sleeps much better, but I have no idea why.  Ibuprofen and Tylenol don't help at all

I don't know what it could be.  If its medical why is it better at grandmas? Why doesn't any medication work?  Why are some nights better than others?  Why are his naps okay?  If its a prop, what prop? Also, he's fully night weaned now.  It wasn't really that hard to do once we started. I was really afraid he was waking out of hunger, but now he goes from 7:00 to 7:00 and only takes around 6 ounces in the morning.

His typical day looks like this:

6:20 up (would like to be 7 and we do pu/PD till 7 but it hasn't made any difference)
7:00 breasfeed
9:00 breakfast
10-10:30 nap (depending on how bad the night was)
11:30 (or when up for nap) breastfeed
1:00 lunch
3:30 nap
4:30 (or when up) breastfeed
6:30 dinner (followed by nurse so we can brush teeth after bath and move the nurse further away from bedtime in case it was a prop)
7:00 bath, massage, story
7:30 bed

his naps are usually around 1hr15-1hr30.  His NW are totally random.  Sometimes he self settles, sometimes he up and down (wakes, settles for 10 minutes, wakes settles for 20 minutes), sometimes he's easy to settle, sometimes he's hysterical. He's up between 2-12+ times a nights, and I'm never able to predict what his nights going to be like.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi. I'm not a BW expert. Just another Mom with a little night waker. He's almost 9 mo old and I have been sleep training him for 3 months. He tends to err toward very long wakings rather than short/frequent, but they are randomly timed and seem to have no rhyme or reason. Occasionally he sleeps through the night.

I found it encouraging to know (maybe you will, too) that there are other Moms (not just me) who have chronic night walkers in spite of diligent parenting. I wish you the very best of luck!

Ps. I would be tempted to go stay over at grandma's for a while? Maybe he prefers the bed there?

yeah we tried staying at grandmas for a week to get him in the habit of sleeping, but it didn't work.  And he's never actually slept longer than 5 hours anywhere.  But it does help to know there are other parent out there

Hmm, have you ever tried something like an air purifier in his room to see if there's some allergen in your house that isn't at grandma's?

Hello, I just wondered how you are doing. Are you having any change or improvement in your son's sleep?

I am curious about how you respond to your son's wakings at night. You said you had posted on the PU/PD board before. Are you still using some variation of PU/PD? Any luck?

Hoping you are doing better than I am.
