Short morning naps
« on: February 28, 2013, 10:08:21 am »
Hello,
I have a few questions and hoped someone could help please!

My LO is 4 months, I cant seen to get the morning nap correct which puts her day off. This morning, she was awake at 6.55 (she may have been awake before then but this is when I woke) and I fed her, she was starting to suck her thumb and getting agitated at 7.55 so I put her in her cot and she went asleep from 8.00 to 8.45. She woke up and stayed awake from then until 10.00. She was happy in her cot, not crying. At about 9.45, I went in and put on white noise and I think thats what helps her get to sleep.

I am thinking that the A time was too short but if shes getting ansy, what should I do?
Also, when she has a short nap and is content in the cot, should I leave her or take her out? I know the BW said about quite time, should I do this in future?

I will get her up at 11.00am for her next feed, when should I put her back down again? I think I should reduce the A time as she didnt get enough sleep in the morning but I hate her not getting the full amount of activity/learning. I try to look for tired signs but it is very hard.

Thanks

The average A time for a 4 month old is about 1hr45-2hrs, so I think that first nap is too early. Is my baby ready to increase his ‘A’ time? (incl. 'A' times for younger babies)

I'd push out the A time slowly, 15 mins at a time and hold for 3-4 days each time, until your nap is closer to 8.45/9. Do something nice and low-key for the end of the A time to help her adjust :)

when she has a short nap and is content in the cot, should I leave her or take her out?

I would leave her for a bit of quiet time - maybe she will resettle. But I'd probably get her up after half an hour and go on with the day.

If she does a short nap, reduce the next A a little, maybe 15 mins, but not too much or you'll get another UT nap ;) But did she go back to sleep from 9.45-11 yesterday? If so, that was a good total amount of sleep, even though it was interrupted, so I would have done a full A after that.

Hi Papaya
Thank you for your reply.
I will try to extend A times starting at 1.5hours for a few days and then extend. My only concern would be that she will get overtired, however, she is at the age where she should be able to stay awake and if I do it gradually, it should work.

Yesterday, she slept from 10.00-10.40. I fed her at 10.50 and put her down at 12.00 because she was crying - probably from being overtired and she is also teething. She then slept from 12.00-13.20 which was very good for her.
Thanks again
