9 month old wakes up every night at the same time
« on: March 19, 2013, 09:13:37 am »
Hello,

Can anyone help please. My LO decided around a week ago that he will not let us sleep at night  :o
He has always been a good night sleeper. Any issues we had where always easily solve by adjusting his A time at day. This hasn't been a case this time and I run out of ideas what to do.

I should probably start with going back two weeks. He was really ill about two weeks back with ah horrendous stomach bug and the temp of 40 degrees. It took a full week to recover and my poor little boy has been of the food for 4 days. Since he is better he has been eating like mad.

For the last week he has been waking up ever night at 3ish am. Crying his little eyes out. The only way to calm him down is to put the lights on. Pat/shhhh and any other method we've tried makes him cry even more. As you can imagine it's very difficult to get him back to sleep afterwords.

I thought that maybe it is a hunger so I've give him a milk feed two nights in the row but he will finish his milk and  starts his hysteria again.

When he was so poorly he would sleep with us, or rather he would sleep on my place and I would sit next to him changing his cold compresses. So I thought that maybe he want's to sleep with us (which is fine) but no. He would still cry and doesn't want to resettle.

He was also been given a medicine every night at 3am so I'm worried that he developed a habit now (?)

He's daily routine is good and he had a two naps (first 1,5 and second either 1,5 or 45 min and EB).

He was doing a 3.30 - 3.45 A time but since the NW started he can only mange around 3.15 - 3.30.

I really have got now idea what to do and I haven't had a decent night sleep for two weeks  :'(

Can anyone help please?

Any chance of an ear infection/sore throat? I doubt medicine is becoming a habit. Waking at that hour may have become a habit though if you were waking him to give him the meds - you could try wake to sleep at 2am and see if that helps reset his clock.

You could also be seeing some separation anxiety - 9 months is the most common time for it to start: Tips for seperation anxiety

Are you capping the morning nap at all?

I often find mums think bub is better before he really is fully back to being himself - when did he start eating again?

Thank you for your replay.

He is definitely better now as he has been checked by GP on Monday. It's exactly a week now since he start taking food. He's morning nap has always been 1,5 to the minute but I've started waking him up for the last 2-3 days from the pm nap after 1,5.

Anyway something strange happen last night. He slept fine. He woke up briefly at 4ish am. Gave him a bit of water and he went back to sleep to his usual 6.30am. Why? He had only napped for about 20-30 min in the afternoon in the buggy on the day. Can that be a reason?

He had his usual two long naps today so I wonder what the night will bring today............
