3 month old waking every hour or less
« on: March 14, 2013, 15:34:50 pm »
My little boy turned 3 mos yesterday, and for the past two weeks our sleep pattern or 4 hrs, 3 hrs, 2,2 has been turned upside down.  Lately he has been sleeping 3 hr at the start of the night and then waking every hour or less after that.  I rock him back to sleep unless it has been 2+ hours since he has been fed, in which case I breast feed him.

He is exclusively breasted.  He has always had trouble with gas, so I am no longer eating dairy, we are giving him infacol at night.  I am block feeding to reduce my milk flow.

His general pattern during the day is to wake up at 8:30ish, have 4-5 30 min naps throughout the day in his crib or bouncy chair and one 1.5-2 hour nap in the afternoon in his swing.  I feed him approximately every 2 hours.. He is vey big for his age.  His last nap of the day is mid evening and then we bathe him and try to get him down for the night 1.5 hours later.  That usually ends up being between 9:30 and 10pm.

He sleeps in a crib in his own room.  He usually falls to sleep with a soother but doesn't use one for the rest if the night.  We have tried white noise and tummy sleeping... Neither of them seem to extend his night sleeps.

He doesn't wake up crying..  More crying out and grunting, bringing his knees up.  If I don't go to him he gets louder and more awake.

I am running out of ideas.. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to Baby Whisperer  :)

Sorry to hear that you are having troubles. I see you have taken dairy out of your diet - are you being really strict and have you tried taking soy out too as they can often be related?

Did yu see a difference wehen you first took the dairy out?

Sorry I can't help with any routine issues but there will be other ladies who will be able to.

x

Hi Kath, firstly welcome to BW  :)

I'm really not much help with routines any more as I'm hardly on BW much these days and lost touch with things. But just curious could he be teething? I know my daughter started teething about the 3 month mark. What about reflux as well? My son started with that about 10 weeks.

Does he cluster feed on an evening? My son would feed like a monster all evening!

I was a bit of a slave to the routine when I had S but when J came along I just wapped my boob out and got him on it as fast as possible! But if it's gas that's the  main problem then I don't really know what to do  :( I would say if it's dairy it can take a good few weeks for any dietary exclusion to start taking effect.

Sorry I'm not much help. But I know the distress tiredness brings so wanted to answer.

Hi, can you post what your day looks like (as close as you can get to it -- maybe just as it's gone for the last two days?) in this format?

Buntybear has made a good point about the intolerances.  As you can see, she has had a lot of experience in that area!

I'm guessing you have some overtiredness going on with your naps being so short -- but I'm wondering if your short naps are due to some discomfort.  Is the swing the only place you get a good nap?  Is it moving or stationary?

Thanks so much to those who replied!

I gave up dairy around New Years Day.. Hard to say whether it made a difference but I went back on it recently for a couple days and that's when the nights got really bad.  However, he also had his immunization around that time.  I've been back off dairy for two weeks, and don't drink soy milk though I'm a vegetarian so I eat soy products like veggie ground round and tofu.

Generally he is up around 8am and wants his first nap about an hour later.  From that point on he generally has 90 minute stretches between naps.  I usually put him in the crib now with white noise as I have found the moving swing isn't even that effective at prolonging naps anymore.  He doesn't show signs of discomfort during his day sleeps.  I just hear him moving around and making sounds and sure enough he is wide awake in the crib.  We usually give him a bath between 7 and 8, and his first night sleep is between 9 and 10. He seems hyper after bath time, but not giving him a bath doesn't seem to make a difference to his sleeps.

Here's a snapshot of today..
Awake 8, nurse 5 min
Sleep in crib from 9:30-10:06, nurse 4 min
Sleep 11:30-12:40 on my husband, nurse 4 min
Sleep 2:15-2:55 in crib
3:30 nurse 4 min
5:15-5:45 sleep in crib
6:00 nurse 4 min
6:50 started to sleep on me and still is!
About 90 mins after he wakes from this nap we will feed him and try and put him down for his first night sleep.

I feed on demand which these days amounts to approx every 2.5 hours.  I try to feed a bit more at night in the hopes of tanking him up for a long sleep.

I think he is teething as he drools and munches his hands a lot.  He has also been spitting up a lot more lately.  He is generally a pretty fussy guy.

Hmm...he may actually be a little bit overtired -- 30 minute naps often mean an overtired baby.  I might try cutting your A time back by about 10-015 minutes and see if it helps.  I can't help but think there's something else going on as well with wakings like that.  Is he looking for anything when he wakes?

Waking that frequently all night indicates discomfort to me :-\

Have you ruled out reflux?
It could be he is also soy intolerant. .. :-*
