Is it normal to be cutting naps short for 10.5 mth old?
« on: March 18, 2013, 11:39:03 am »
Hi everyone,

My LO goes down for naps really well (sorry to those who are reading this wanting to bash me over the head with a bumbo) but I'm beginning to think that his restlessness at night (normally btwn 1am and 3am) is due to getting just that little bit too much sleep in the day. Is it normal at this age to wake him up from his naps or should I still be letting him sleep as much as he wants?

Generally he has a nap at 10am and 3pm and I try to make the combined nap time of no more than 3 hrs.

I was capping first nap at 30mins then uncapped 3hrs later at 10.5 months with a max 11hr night. We ended up having to do it as he was getting 2 shorter naps 45 -1:15 each and being a bit grumpy because neither of them were restorative. I wouldn't say it's unusual as alot of LO's are starting the 2-1 transition around this age. Have you checked out:

10/11 month old sleep gone wonky? Read this first!

Does any of this ring true for you?

yeah I've read it several times and some of it rings true. He generally goes down for naps fine but sometimes he will resist.

I suppose for now until he consistently resists one of the naps I should have the morning one as uncapped (less likely to cause a fuss) and the afternoon one as a catnap of say 45 mins. Or shall I keep doing what I'm doing? Does it really matter!?!?

I'd say only cap one if you are starting to get short nights, repeated nap/bedtime resistance or if he is cranky/tired as a result of not having one of the naps be a longer more restorative one. If you do look to cap you can do so with either of the naps. Capped afternoon nap never worked for us, but capped morning then longer afternoon worked really well.
