10month old long term early wakings getting earlier
« on: March 26, 2013, 11:00:06 am »
Hi, I have posted here before about DS early wakings, then he got ill so his routine has gone out of the window. He is all well now but his early wakings has gotten even worse, or it may count as NW because he has been waking before 4am. So he stands in the cot and cries straight away after he got up at 0350 this morning, I went in and tried to resettle him, after 20min, he settled and fell asleep for 10mins then he woke again and the same repeated for about 1.5hr until I gave up and hold him to sleep, then he slept from 0520 til 0605. Every morning has been the same for the past few weeks or so, and I started to think the wakings are becoming a habit. I am also starting to think he is a very low sleep baby because even he has only had 9.5 hr night sleep, he is wide awake and ready to go after this time. And even holding or rocking him will not work. He is an independent sleeper at all other times except in the morning.

Here is the routine for yesterday:

WU 0535
S 0945 - 1115
S 1500 - 1600 (capped)
BT 1900

I think he is in a 2-1 transition now, should I further cap his nap?? And is it ok to cap his nap in the PM instead of AM (which I think most mums do?? ) because his AM nap is not always 1.5 hours, it ranges from 45min - 1.5 hrs, so I can leave him to sleep in the PM if he has a short nap in the AM??

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Have you read this about the 2-1 transition? 10/11 month old sleep gone wonky? Read this first!. Yes it's absolutely fine to cap the pm nap rather than the am and that's what we did until the pm nap was refused completely.

Is he teething at the moment?  That can sometimes cause long NWs at this age - have you tried meds to see if they make a difference?

I actually think that he's probably OT at the moment and the happy wide awake 'ready to go' that you are seeing is more likely from all the adrenaline going round his system.  Would he go down earlier for his naps so you can let him have a couple of days of uncapped naps to catch up?

If I put him down earlier, he will fight it and only nap for 1hr 15min max, that's why his A time is quite high especially in the morning.

Here is todays so far:
WU 0605
S 1010 - 1120
S 1505

I just tried to put him down for 1445 but he fussed and stood up in the cot for 20min, he is napping now.
So should I try put him down earlier for his first nap again and see?

Or keep his first nap at the same time and try earlier for the second nap?  That may have been OT fussing about.....

So yesterday DS had a relatively short day and he woke up at 4am this morning but went back to sleep on his own after 5mins and slept til 0550. This is quite an improvement! Here was yesterday:

WU 0640 (Woke at 0430, didn't resettle til 0600, slept til 0640)
S 1040-1120
S 1500-1600 (I tried to put him down at 1440 but he stood up in the cot til 1500)
BT 1900

He had two quite short nap yesterday but his day was only 12hr20min, then he had a almost 11hr night.
So should I make his day even shorter today and see if he will have a full 11 hr?
Or if he ends up having good naps today, should I stick to 13hr day instead?

On good nap days I would go for 12.5/13h, on bad nap days I would try to keep the day to 12h if you can :)
