Sucking in lots of air/ breaking the seal
« on: March 27, 2013, 01:14:34 am »
My 7 week old daughter has been sucking in lots of air during feedings and I havent been able to stop it!
She is gaining weight well and is generally a great nurser, but these past two weeks has been consistently very noisy feedings where she is breaking the seal with each suck. Its not causing much discomfort in me, but definitely makes her more gassy.. and its just plain annoying! :P

I've tried laid back nursing, different positions, re positioning lips and lower jaw, re-latching again and again.. So far nothing works. I assume a lot of it has to do with regulating the let down and if my breast is very full, but it'll be happening throughout a whole bf session sometimes.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Has she been checked for a tongue tie?

Are your breasts normally engorged? Have you tried taking her off when you get and letting the milk flow subside before relatching her?

She was checked for tounge tie in the hospital and this has only become an issue in the past couple weeks.
I am not ever engorged (2nd baby ) just full if we haven't nursed in a while.
She seems to do it when there is any significant milk flow not just let down.  I have tried waiting for ld to stop but still with the air sucking.    :(
I'm stumped and wondering if she'll grow out of it.

It does sound like there's a bit of a suck/swallow/breathe problem somewhere.  Has she got a stuffy nose at all?
