25 minute naps driving me mad!!
« on: March 12, 2013, 16:16:55 pm »
My 6 month old son has only ever taken short daytime naps since he was very young. Now they're 25 minutes long almost to the second and it's really frustrating!

He sleeps well at night, 7 - 6/7ish with a DF at 10pm, although it can be a bit of a battle to get him down. We've recently used PUPD to get him to settle himself as we'd accidentally got into the habit of having him fall asleep on us. This was initially successful although we're currently experiencing a bit of regression with his nighttime sleep, he still settles easily for daytime naps mostly.

Until a couple of days ago he'd be awake for approx 2hrs/2 hrs 15min before showing signs of tiredness at which point I'd take him to his nursery have 5/10 mins wind down then he'd go into his cot & fall asleep easily only to wake 25 minutes later. I've tried extending naps by shh/pat and also by holding/rocking him (which I'd rather not do having just broken that habit) but neither have had much success-maybe get an extra 10 mins out of him.  The past couple of days he's extended his awake time to about 3 hrs & dropped one of his naps so he now has 3 in a day, but he still only sleeps for 25/30 minutes.

He generally wakes happy but is often yawning & rubbing his eyes shortly after his nap although he won't go back to sleep if I try to put him back down.

If short naps are a symptom of OT then I think I should reduce his A time but when I've tried that he just crawls around in his cot until his usual A time then gets more difficult to settle.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi there,
Could you post a typical day for me in EAS format - will be easier to see what is going on. Sounds like he might be UT but then ends up OT...

He doesn't keep to the order EAS as his short naps mean he's not always hungry when he wakes up after just 25 minutes. The past couple of days have looked like this:

Wakes at 6
E: 6 (milk feed) This is almost a DF as he falls back to sleep while being fed.

Wakes again at 7
A: 7 - 9.30
E: 8.30 (solids)
S: 9.30 - 10

A: 10 - 12.45
E: 12 (milk feed)
S: 12.45 - 1.15

A: 1.15 - 4.30
E: 4 (solids)
S: 4.30 - 5

A: 5 - 7
E: 5.30 (milk feed)
S: 7

E: 10 (milk feed DF)

Thanks

ok well 30 min naps are usually OT. Have you tried pulling back the A time by 15 mins? Is he teething atm? Any discomfort you are aware of?

I wonder if it is better to just start the day at 6am as that is a pretty good night...does he always fall straight to sleep while feeding?

He is teething but seems to be handling it really well, just the occasional cry or rub of him gums.

I'm guessing the struggle I have sometimes getting him to settle at bedtime is because he's OT after so little daytime sleep?  We've been out & about most of today so far & he's been napping for 20/25 mins every time we got into the car, even with short A times in between (1hr - 1hr15).

I'll try shortening his A times & see how we get on. Thank you.

I've been trying shortening his A time but its not having any impact on his nap lengths. I've also been trying wake to sleep which has helped a couple of times but even then he's only slept another 10/15 minutes. When it hasn't worked I've ended up holding him for a while. He tends to go back to sleep after 5/10 mins, sleep on me for about 20 then I can usually put him back down in his cot for anything from 10 - 30 extra mins. Will this work to 'train' him into longer naps? Or am I creating another problem for myself of him needing me as a prop to get through his sleep cycle transitions?

On top of this his teething has really kicked in & he's now waking 5 or 6 times in the night so I'm extra aware of needing to prevent him being OT by bedtime because of the sleep he's missing out on at night.

if he is teething then I would not worry too much about APing a little bit, sometimes you have to in order to prevent awful OT. I found DS needed less A time when he was teething badly. Are you using meds at all?

Yes, I'm alternating between Calprofen & Infant Nurofen and also using Anbesol.

With his disturbed sleep overnight & his short naps his A time is getting shorter and shorter. It's now about 1.5hrs before he starts yawning & rubbing his eyes.

well A times do often shorten with teething but maybe he is coming down with a bug?
