Exhausted and looking for help
« on: April 05, 2013, 18:34:23 pm »
My DS is almost 7 months old. From about 3 months on he has been a poor sleeper with numerous NWings. He started to nap better at about 5 months, but this had no affect on his night time sleep. For the past week or so he has been waking up literally every two hours. Sometimes I feed him, sometimes I resettle him. It used to just be a quick popping the paci in his mouth and he's resettle, but lately he's been taking sometimes up to an hour to get to sleep. He's also waking up about 30 minutes after he goes to sleep at BT, and it's hit or miss whether he settles quickly at BT or whether it takes 30 minutes of running up and down to get him to settle (I'll just pop his paci in when he's been crying for a few mins).
I have no idea what to do here to make things better. Our EASY looks something like this:

6:30/45am wake up and BF
8am solids
9:00/9:15am nap until 10:30/11 (usually 1.5 hours but sometimes will do 2)
11/11:30 BF
12:30 solids
1/1:30pm nap (this one is usually only an hour)
3pm BF
4pm solids
4:30 CN for half an hour
6:30 BF and BT

I'm not up on routine for this age - hopefully someone else might be along soon - but I'm wondering if he should have dropped the cat nap by now? Don't know if there might be something in the routines threads to have a look at.

Is he able to go to sleep independently? My DS used to wake very early in his night too - and this was before he'd learnt to self settle.

There are days where he doesn't have his CN but it doesn't seem to change things. He may settle faster on those nights but he's still up not long after. He is able to go to sleep independently (so long as he has his paci). He is also swaddled, because if I don't, his hands automatically go to his face and his paci is out in seconds.
My DD didn't drop her CN until 8 months... not sure that he will be the same, but we are working towards dropping it, I just have to stretch his A time more.

If you extend this A time in the middle here, that should help you drop the CN and get him an extra restorative nap in the day which should reduce the OT at bedtime (and the resulting wakings early in the night).
