No more (apparent) hunger cues 4.5 month old
« on: April 06, 2013, 14:36:10 pm »
What do I do when there are no more hunger cues?

We have been on easy since my son has been 7 weeks old.  At 4.5 months, we are still on a 3h easy (trying to resolve some issues with naps and nighttime sleep on another thread) but am thinking of gradually transitioning to a 3.5h easy.

Hunger cues used to be easy to read, but now...
- no more rooting (obviously)
- he ALWAYS has his hands (or something else) in his mouth

He's been waking prematurely from his naps and often I can't tell if he's miserable because he's cranky (from not sleeping enough) or hungry.  If I offer him the breast he'll take it, even if he's just eaten (I think he just loves to suck on mommy's boob! lol) so that doesn't help me in knowing whether he's hungry or not...

Any insight on this?

It's likely he can go more than 3hrs now so I would definitely gradually extend the time between feeds if he isn't showing hunger signs earlier.
