3 yr old totally off
« on: April 18, 2013, 13:11:27 pm »
I cant believe I'm actually at a loss with DS and his sleep routine!  Unless he was teething, we never had issues and always stayed on routine.  He always required the higher amount of hours of sleep as well.  Now heres where we are at for the pass 4 or 5 months......

He refuses to nap....I still will make him have quiet time in his bed with a book and soft music..... occasionally he will fall asleep for an hour and he is SUPER cranky after.  If we are out he will sleep in car for longer and more likely to be a little happier.  Ive tried putting him top bed as early as 6pm to 8pm....no matter what he is up by 6am....which is killing my husband and I.  Then I tried not letting him nap and he was consistently doing wake at 6am-bed at 6pm.  But towards the end of the evening it was a very hyper emotional child and we were so exhausted ourselves we started going to bed at 8 or 9!!

I feel like Ive tried EVERYTHING!  Its so wonky and we all are so tired and cranky!  Any suggestions?

Pretty normal to be dropping the nap at this age. Have you got a Groclock or lights on a timer or something so that he knows if it is 'morning' yet when he wakes up? I'd try an even earlier bedtime on no nap days - maybe even 5 or 5.30pm. Does he (has he, in the past) tack on sleep at night if he's missed out on sleep during the day?

Yes...if he ever missed a nap I would add it to bed time.  If he ever missed it and I couldnt...NW all night!  So I pretty much NEVER allow that to happen lol.

So maybe I should shoot for earlier and hopefully after a bit he'll catch up and maybe even sleep pass 6am? lol  I can live with 7am..ince

He knows if the sun isnt up its not time to get up....but since he is fully potty trained he wakes to pee then 5min later poop....I  have to assist him.

I'd put a potty in his room. He can pee by himself? If he needs you to wipe him, you come in, do it, leave without any further interaction.

Yes on no nap days I would do an 11hr day.

That's over 12hrs sleep so that should help him be caught up a bit today. I know it's not great for you though... so what happens when he wakes up so early, what does he do and what do you do? What time do you actually leave bedrooms and start the day? What happens before that?

He peed during the night around 11:30 pm.  At 5:45 he peed, asked to get up I said the sun isnt even up go to bed, then 6am went #2, asked again to get up, so I said still too early but can read books in bed, by 6:30 he was yelling to watch tv and have a granola bar! He has never done that!  At that point I made breakfast let him eat, now hes been playing.  My husband and I are zombies drinking coffee still lol.

Im home with DS all day everyday.  We usually have playdates or library programs thru out the week.  We go out around 10-11am.

Maybe since he woke so early and doesnt seem OT he will nap today.  Any suggestions what time to try to put him down?  And If he does nap...when should we shoot for bed?  Guess bed varies on nap, and length of nap. ::)

I guess after 12hrs sleep you can't really say he has to go back to sleep but in general I would set a time for what is OK to get up and not deviate from that. It seems like the clock has become a point of negotiation? Like, it is still night time but you can read/play? Is that fair to say?

I'd keep the nap short. I'm not so good with naps for older toddlers, mine dropped his right at his third birthday. I'd probably do a short nap around 1pm - just half an hour or so - and then a 'normal' bedtime and hope for a decent night. Might be worth going back over the rules about the Groclock.

What a better rest of day since nap...he did 45min...i was going to wake him after an hr tho....he woke happy and I was so happy he was refreshed. I was nervous about BT...he said he was tired then got lil crazy....I put him in at 7...he sang to himself then used potty at 730...then asleep by 745! I'm hopeful he will wake refreshed and after 630....

I think last night really early BT got him caught up! I can't even believe he napped so easily...DH was home and said noway he was going to nap. He didn't seem tired. I stuck to ur advice and am SO GREATFUL!!!! XO
