How long does your 21/22 month old sleep in 24 hrs
« on: April 25, 2013, 05:43:36 am »
Hi just wondered how much sleep your LO's seem to need now.

I've been having trouble with my LO's naps + night sleep for a few weeks now but I have noticed if she has a 1 hr nap has 11hrs sleep at night + when she's had 1.5hrs nap has 10.5 hrs sleep at night. So I'm guessing she only needs 12 hrs now does that sound about right for her age?x

Doesn't sound an unreasonable amount, but they are all different ;) if she  is happy on it and not having sleep troubles (eg trouble settling or NWs) then it is prob ok.

I also noticed that longer naps always stole more from the night than she got from the longer nap.

At around that age I think she got between 11 and 12 hrs per day, usually around 11.5. But she is on the low side of sleep needs.

We have just come out of what I think was overtiredness I think due to to having short nights. I never know when to put her dwn at bedtime + has started taking her longer to fall asleep also not sure if its due to longer days or not tired enough after 1.5 hr nap.x

you might be at the very start of the 1-0, when the nap starts to affect night sleep.

For us, when naps started to reduce night length, L could get in an OT-UT loop.  She would be OT overall but still a nap made her UT at BT from the nap.

what helped us was capping the nap back gradually to keep nights as long as possible, BT at a constant time, and minimise BT resistance.

you said nights were longer with a 1hr nap, maybe stick with a 1hr nap for a while and see how that goes?

However, others prefer to keep a long(er) nap and put up with short(er) nights.

It will depend on what suits you and your LO best (some LOs really don't like their nap to be capped ;) )

Some ppl find that they can just get away (for a while) with moving the nap later, keeping it the same length, but the long morning A time means that they are still tired at BT.

So, lots of options!

Thanks for your help.  How long would you make the day with a 1hr nap? Her nap is at 1pm. Was moved to 1.15-30 but thought with taking longer to sleep might need more awake time to bed.

When we moved from 2-1 at about 16 months she only slept 1 hr for most of her naps then + its only when she turned 19 months she's taken longer naps.

Will have a look at the 1-0 link thanks.x

After a 1 hr nap you could try BT about 12.5hrs after WU. That way she can have up to a 11hr30 night so get 12hr30 overall, is that about what you think she needs?
How would that work for you?

Hi Just popping in to say my DS sleeps 10hrs at night and now around 1.5hr nap.  Until recently he did 2 to 2.5hr nap and nights still the same, 10 hrs.

Hi! My DD is 21m (nearly 22mm) and sleeps for 2h in the day ( usually capped) and 11h at night. However she started to shortens her night so we're in the process of pushing the nap out ( still at 2h for now)

My DS must be higher sleep needs. :-\  He's 21mo today and gets 1.5-2hr nap and 11.5-12hr night.

It seems like you've noticed a pattern between shorter nap and longer night so this may not apply to you, but just wanted to mention that taking longer to fall asleep at night does not always mean you need to start capping the nap. It can be teeth, developmental, etc. My DS has been doing this on and off for the last couple weeks and I thought he might need a routine change, but one night I put him down earlier than usual, because I needed to help DD and I knew he'd be fine to roll around the crib a bit before falling asleep. That night he actually fell asleep faster than the others.

My nearly 22 month ds sleeps 7-630 (11.5) and 1 hour nap, she dropped to 1 nap at 12 months (her choice) and we've recently shortened her day nap from 2 to 1 hours

My DS2 was sleeping 2 hrs in the day and 10.5-11hrs at night. We try to keep the nap at 1pm and BT at 7.30pm then he will wake any time from 6.10-6.40am.

Just this last week though he has been doing only a 1hr nap and I have noticed on those days the nap is 1-2pm he will then sleep 7.30pm-7am-ish so I am considering capping the nap if he doesn't do so himself. I let him sleep over 2 hrs today though so I'm probably in for an early start. He has always been much lower sleep needs than my DS1 though and prone to early starts.
