Do I still need to give him milk?
« on: May 19, 2013, 15:06:59 pm »
So finally we weaned the BT bottle! Yay! But do I still need to give him milk during teh day instead? He has lots of dairy during the day, he eats yogurt in the morning, usually has cheese and cream cheese on his bread for one of the snacks and at supper.
And if I do need to still give him milk what would be a good amount?
Thanks.

If he likes milk as a drink then you can let him have some during the day, many children have milk for a bedtime drink too - just in a cup!

My two have milk with cereal for breakfast and sometimes a cup of milk for a snack or as a drink with their evening meal. They don't need to have cow's milk for the calcium, thye can get it from foods which it sounds like he does. If you are worried you could see what the recs are for calcium in your area and check what he has in a day!

C tends to have milk in a cup (smallish beaker) at least 1-2 cups per day as well as other forms of dairy. She will either have milk/juice at breakfast and milk/ juice at afternoon snack time (if she chose juice for breakfast we steer her towards milk for snack and vv) and she has a cup of milk at BT. She will often ask for a drink of milk and I give it to her if she asks but equally I don't sweat it if she doesn't want it because she has plenty of calcium in her diet (leafy green veg, other dairy products).

The toddler guidance I read said 4 servings of milk/dairy per day.
1 portion is half cup (roughly 120ml or 4oz) of milk or yoghurt
or 1.5oz (or 1inch cube) of cheese.
This might help you estimate the solids dairy he is getting. Mine drinks between 150 and 200ml per day from a cup plus whatever solids.
