Bit of a muddle with sleep routine for 2 yr old
« on: June 17, 2013, 13:39:20 pm »
DD will be 2 in a week and a half and we've got two issues at the moment. EW and sometimes taking 1-1.5hrs to go to sleep at BT. Bad days look like this:

WU 4:30-5:30 (will not settle back down, wide awake and playing)
Nap 11:30\12 for 1.5 hrs
BT 6:30 (actually in bed ready for sleep but won't fall asleep until 7:30/8, one night it was 9:30)

A slightly better day looks like this:

WU 5:45 (still too early compared to 6:30/7 that she used to do)
Nap 12/12:30 for 1.5 hrs
BT 7 (asleep by 7:30/8)

OH decided to cap her naps to 1.5 hrs as he believed she was getting too much daytime sleep and was causing the EW and her messing about at BT as she was UT. We've been doing this for 2 wks now and no difference so obviously not the right thing to do, so what next? No idea what to do about her nap, what time, cap it, let her sleep?

Then how to handle BT? We know we need to get her into bed early on an early WU otherwise the day is way too long. She's obviously tired after we've done bath, brush teeth and story but it then it seems as if a switch is flicked when I close the book - she goes into hyper mode! She'll kick the covers off, jump out of bed, try to drag books into bed or play with her toys. We put her straight back into bed each time she gets out, repeating 'sleepy tired' 'your tired' and then not engaging with her at all but to no avail (one night we put her back to bed over 100 times!) Sometimes she'll squeal and giggle other times she cries.

It's become a real battle and spending up to an hour and a half outside her door each night is so draining. Especially when we used to just kiss her goodnight, go downstairs and she'd fall asleep! Then combined with the EW and me working full time I'm absolutely shattered!

I'm sure it's all related but not sure how and at a loss on what to do to fix it, any ideas please?

Hello,

Sounds like she has got OT after EWs and late BTs. Have you ever tried an earlier BT of say 6.30 or even 6pm after a very EW to help her catch up again? Might be worth it for a few days to help her catch up.

Then, rather than capping the nap (since that doesn't seem to have worked), you could try pushing it later. Lots of ppl fine that helps instead of nap capping.

Thank you for the reply, must admit my gut feeling was OT. We have tried early BT of 6/6:30pm but she's been a monkey and not gone to sleep till 7/7:30pm! Hopefully not capping the nap will help with that.

So if we don't cap her nap, should we just let her sleep as long as she wants? Also how should we go about pushing the nap out? What time should we eventually be aiming to get to? What do we do on EW days, not sure how long we would be ok keeping her up for?

Sorry for more questions, just desperate to try to get this right!

Usually we would say push the nap out by 15 mins and then hold for a few days to see where that gets you. You may then have to move it out further.  Also, depending on how much you move the nap, you might need a later BT.
At this age, some LOs whose naps aren't capped have shorter nights  but keep the nice long nap eg 2hrs

Ok thank you. Just still not sure what to do with her nap time on an EW day though, do we just stick with whatever time we've got to, regardless of the time she woke up and aim for EBT?

It might a bit of trial and error and will depend on how tired she seems. I'd be inclined to try to keep her up as close to normal nap time as poss (since bringing it earlier may cause EW) and then do EBT if needed, but if she seems to really be ready for her nap then put her down. If you try this one day after an ew and get a short OT nap, then you'll know that next time you can't stretch her so far.
