Short naps
« on: July 04, 2013, 21:51:12 pm »
Is 25 min naps UT or OT? What about 45 minute naps? My son now wakes up after 25 to 45 minutes and starts to play trying to roll over in his crib. He is a belly sleeper and and can't get him back down with patting which is my usual method.

Usually 45 minute naps are UT and 25 are OT. It's best to ook at how he is when he wakes- if he's happy and ready to play then it;s usually undertired- but if he's cranky and crying usually OT...

Here's some info on the 20 minute wake up Short naps - why does my baby wake after 20 minutes?

Not sure how old your LO is, but my DD is 4.5 months and also a tummy napper. If she wakes early from a nap, I have to put her head down for her, and put her hands down so that she's not picking herself up. I gently hold her head down for a bit so that she can resettle while I pat her back.

Working on the correct A times always helps.

^^Very true, but also just wanted to add that depending how old your lo is it might just be developmental and one of those annoying things you have to ride out.  Short naps are really common under 6 months old and you can drive yourself crazy trying to tweak A times.  I think as long as you're trying for an age-appropriate routine don't stress too much if you get a short nap.  Resettle if you can, but know that it's not always anything you're doing.

My son is 3.5 months but he is super active. His A times have been changing a lot lately and I think he starting to transition to the 4hr easy but some days his A time is only 1.25 hrs. I find it hard sometimes to get the last nap in if he wakes early and woke go back down then to get another nap in he either has to go before the full A time or go longer till bed. What to do?

I struggled with A times for the past 2 months - you can make yourself crazy!  Magically, this week, with no change, Violet began taking 1.5 to 2hr naps like she should be for a 5 month old.  For no reason.  Just stopped waking up at the 45 minute mark like she always did.  Be patient with your LO but consistent.  If she was happy sometimes I would let her play for 10-15min to see if she fell back asleep and sometimes she did, sometimes she didn't.  It throws your EASY for a loop but I found sometimes I ended up with more of an AEASY schedule and an early bedtime.  Good luck!

I agree with others, short naps can be developmental and it may not have anything to do with what your doing, etc... For example, my LO (who is about the same age as yours) started taking long morning naps 1.5-2 hrs) recently and yesterday she pulled a 45 min nap and the rest of the day was a little off and I had to compensate by putting her to bed at 6.30pm. Her A time in the morning is the shortest (1.5 hrs) and the rest of the day it's closer to 1.75. The last nap is always tricky and i put her in a carried for the last catnap. My rule of thumb is that if the last nap is not done by 6pm then I put to bed earlier. It can be a little bit of a stretch (I've never stretched more than 2 hrs) but it seems to work well  :)
