13mo stopped self-settling
« on: August 01, 2013, 20:38:19 pm »
Hoping someone can offer advice...  My ds is 13.5mo and for the last few weeks has been impossible to settle for bedtime. He's not as bad with dh but with me he'll just scream until I pick him up again.

He was never a great sleeper (lots of ap - feeding and rocking to sleep until we did pupd at around 7m) but was self-settling well and by 10m sleeping through most nights. I don't know what caused the change. I went back to work at 9m and he's settled we'll with the childminder and my mum. And he's been walking since 11m. The only things that coincided with this change was the recent heat wave and his 12m injections.

Our routine is usually:
Awake 5am (would love this to be later but like this for a couple of months  :'( )
Nap after about 5 hours for 2 hours, so 10-12 or 12.30
Bath 6/6.30 then bf and bed

The cm sometimes does a 2nd nap so today he napped 10-11.30 and 2-3 (he'd never do his at home). Neither scenario seems to make much difference with bt. He's been so bad at settling that I've reverted to feeding him to sleep, and tonight it took 2 hours to get him asleep into the cot (dh was out).

I think this may be separation anxiety as it's only really me he's like it with. What strategies can I use to get back on track?

It sounds like OT to me - the day is pretty long now. What time would you say he is asleep? How long has he been on 1 nap? I wonder if it might be worth a really early BT to see if he will catch up overnight? The other option is to do a short 20 min am nap and a longer pm...what do you think?

Thanks for replying. I had wondered about ot, but it's odd that it's only with me he's like this which is what made me think separation anxiety. On a 'normal' night he's asleep by 7, so is maybe only getting 12 hours sleep a day. Or 13 some days. How much should we be aiming for now? I did try a short mn but he still seemed so tired when I woke him that it seemed mean!

DD was on 12.5 at that age but she is fairly low sleep needs, DS was 13. I think 12 would def be too low.

But, the goal is to get him out of OT and onto a better routine and wake-up, so really you need to wake in order to do that.  This was the best way to get both my DD and DS out of an OT, EW routine.

Neither of mine have been low sleep needs, and both were still on two naps at this age doing about a total of 13/14hr sleep per day.
