1 hour naps for 15 month old.. HELP!!!
« on: August 02, 2013, 00:12:21 am »
Hello again,

Im back:)

Ive posted before about my LOs 1 hour nap problem and we are STILL not getting anywhere with longer naps.

Just to recap, he is also an EW and back in June , I started the transition to one nap with advice from the ladies on here...

His day before the transition was much like this:

WU 5.15am
Nap 11am for one hour max, always. Never more.
( he has only napped over an hour a handful of times in his whole short life...)
CN 4pm-4:30pm approx
BT: 6.15pm

This was OK except that we were stuck in an EBT/EW cycle for months , plus the CN was getting harder to fit in...

With advice from Naomi, I then attempted to slowly push nap to midday and still, like clockwork only got one hour naps. Sometimes, 50-55 mins, sometimes 1.05 hrs..With limited success (ie 4 out of 7 days when I have him at home, I could extent them by shhh, patting etc but only by another 30 mins max)
So ended up with 1hr 30 naps max for a while. And still EBT and EW, so routine remained much the same except for nap time.
At childcare 3 days a week, they were unable to extend so we just ended up squeezing in 2 nap days  so he wouldnt be so OT..
At this stage nights hadnt been affected so I assumed it would take a while for naps to lengthen.. This was 7 weeks ago.

In between, we have overseas to Europe so there I just  tried to just go with the flow ( holidays after all :) and some days we did two naps, some days one but BT were sometimes later and still had EW but I figured I would go back to routine once we got home..

We have been home 3 weeks now, are over the jetlag and are back to our old routine of this:

WU 5.30 am ( on a good day)
Nap: 11:45am /12 pm
WU: 12:45pm/1pm
BT: 6:15pm

Only problem is now , we are getting NWs of 2 hours every 2 nd night ...
I am also now unable to resettle the nap anymore so most days , its an hour nap max!!!
Hes so clearly OT, but I cannot extend the nap..No matter what I do.
Its been at least 7 weeks total of trying for one nap and its so hard to see him so OT..
Out of desperation, Ive attempted going back to 2 nap days..

I tried to following which didnt work since it lead to too late a BT but no NWs

WU :5:30am
Nap: 11am
WU: 12pm ( still only one hour...ARGGGGGHHH)
CN: 5pm
WU: 5.30pm ( he would not take it any earlier no matter how hard I tried..)
BT: 7:30pm

This is too long a day and although he slept through , his night sleep has suffered

I tried this yesterday:

WU:5.30am
CN: 10am
WU: 10.30am
Bed : 1.45 pm, woulnt sleep until
Nap: 2:15pm
WU: 3:15pm ( still only one hour...ARGGGGGHHH)
BT: 6:30pm

Had 2 hour NW from 2-4am...
I think, here he was clearly OT from long wake time between WU and second nap but he would not sleep before...

Im at a loss what to do?

Afew other things, he started walking a month ago , is just cutting his last bottom molar and is obviously LSN but this is crazy..
I medicate most nights and some naps since the 4 molars have all cut in the last 6 weeks.

So , I am so sorry fot the long post but what advice would you offer for my situation?
I am absolutley stuck because of these one hour naps and it is just making it impossible for me to figure out how to get him to have the sleep he needs...
I tried WTS yesterday at the 50 mins mark but it didnt work...
Is this worth another go?

Your advice is much appreciated:)

Thankyou

I was assured that naps wopul

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time.  I don't have any good suggestions but I know how frustrating it is when you've tried everything under the sun and nothing works.  They are stubborn little things, aren't they?

Definitely not the same situation as what you are going through but when my DS was a baby/toddler, I could never get him to nap at home, except maybe when he was really sick.  I've tried everything, from different nap times, to rocking, to holding, to even laying down with him for a nap ::).  Nothing worked, except the carseat...  He went to daycare during the week where I *think* he napped OK because he saw all the other kids napping (peer pressure).  But on weekends I would have to time our outings so that he'd fall asleep on the way home.  Then, I would have to sit in the car for about 1.5 hours while he napped, for every nap, rain or shine.  If I tried to move him inside to his crib, the nap was over.  We didn't even have a garage back then so it was me and him in the car parked outside while he napped.  I didn't know it back then, but he woke up from every nap crying (looking back he was OT).  But hey guess what?  We survived his toddlerhood without really napping at home.  Remember, this too shall pass.  Hopefully someone else will come along and give you some good suggestions. HUGS!!!

Hi mamatoathena

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to
my post:)

And yes, even though our situations are different, it still means that nap times aren't much fun for me or restful for him ( sounds like it was the same for you...) my LO always wakes up crying from naps and in the morning. Proves the months of short naps and EW are catching up on him:(
I'm stressed too and wish I could figure out how to make him nap longer since I'm convinced that some sort of consistency here would help with our vicious ebt/EW routine..
Just wanted to say thanks again.
Hopefully someone has some suggestions for me..
Hugs

Hi Loafie! I am sorry to see you are still struggling with those silly 1 hour naps. We finally got out of that with a push towards one nap, alternating with a 30 minute AM nap and then a "proper" nap 2.5 hours later and 1 nap days when waking after 7.  Just want to offer hope as wee are "pretty solidly" on one nap now typically getting around 1.5 hours, sometimes more.

If I were you, I would go with the short AM, long PM ( it DOES get him half and hour more sleep!, that is something!) Even if he only does an hour, then maybe less OT at BT could lead to a longer night? I think W2S needs to be done a few days running but am not sure!
May I ask what you do when you try to resettle? How long do you try? 1 hour wakings for us are OT and I usually don't have to go back in as she will put herself back out, but if I do, I just lie on the little bed in the nursery and tell her "sleepytime, hush Ivy, Mama's here" etc.
I hope this helps and let me know if I can help you and your LO out at all, I know the 1 hour naps can about make you crazy! ((HUGS!!)) Oh and more ((HUGS)) on the teeth, Ivy got her molars ALL at the same time too!

Hi there again Loafie :)

I agree with nevinsmama, it probably is time to continue that push to one nap. Why don't you try alternating one nap and two nap days as suggested?

Hi and thank you so much for replying!
Yes the plan is to alternate with two nap days of short am and one hour pm nap with WUs before 6 am and push for one nap days with after 6 am WUs. He can handle 6 hrs A time in the am so I can put down at midday and hope for a possible resettle.
We actually had a run of two good days with post 6 am WUs and naps of 1.5-2 hours and since yesterday , we are back to the old way but fingers crossed... Shows he can do it.
The only thing I did differently is that I kept him outside before his nap for like 2 hours! It worked since they are the days we had the good naps:) the fresh air must've done something to him! And as for ews , we started using the gro clock ( I know he's only 15 months but who knows!?) and also being abit firmer in our voices  when we resettle so he really knows we mean its not time to wake up yet! One morning , he actually put himself back to sleep till 7.45 am !

Unfortunately , Childcare yesterday meant the run of good luck ended since he short napped  there and we are back to 5.20 am wu this morning:( so 2 nap day today.

As for resettling when he wakes at an hour from naps, I normally wait to see if he will go back ( never does! ) then I go in and whisper ' shhh, it'd still sleeping time , shhh etc' and just put my hand on him or lie him back down. Sometimes I jiggle the mattress abit and this works but honestly, the resettle for one hour naps hasn't worked for weeks. Only if he does under 45 mins will he go back for another cycle...
Tells me maybe he's not tired enough? It used to work back in June and the naptimes were similar..
Ill keep you updated and if anyone has positive gro clock stories for a 15 month old, I'd love to hear them:)

Thought I'd update you and get sone advice at the same time!

After our bad Childcare  day yesterday with EW and 2 naps , I did a 6 pm bt last night and other than a cry out at 9 pm and 4 am ( we medicated here since he was upset and I spotted bottom canines cutting last night. As well as 4 molars poor little man!), he slept through till 6.15 am!!!
Amazing night for us. I don't think he's slept over 12 hours since he was 6
Months old:)
Nap was better too since i kept him outside in the fresh air for nearly 2 hours this morning!

Day went like this

Wu 6.15 am
Nap: 12 pm
Wu : 1.20 pm
Woke up happy and smiley
Bt : 6.15 pm

He was happy and in a great mood both before and after nap and handles the nearly 6 hrs A time fine in the AM.
Now I think the outside thing is really helping with the naps and morning wus have been abit better the last week but do you think I can push the nap out to 12.15 pm to try and get it slightly longer?
It's been at 12 pm for at least 6-7 weeks ( off and on depending on one or two nap days) and my gut instinct tells me maybe the one hour naps we've been struggling with are ut naps?

Thoughts?
I'm happy with today but fingers crossed it lasts , you never know! Also , could the gro clock really help at such a young age? We've been using it the last week and have had exactly 4 post 6 am WUs.. Just a fluke or could he really get it???

Wow fab night little man - so pleased for you! :)

I think it's worth a try with the 1.15 nap, you might find morning follows a little later, you could try moving the gro clock WU at the same time to see what happens. I have no btdt with a gro clock so don't know but there's always a chance he's understood a bit, or perhaps the one nap is just suiting him better. Fingers crossed for tonight sweetie xx

Thanks Naomi!

Well another fab night.
Bt 6.15 pm
Wu: 6:20 am :) :) :)
One nw at 1.30 am , crying and upset but I am 100% sure it's the 6 teeth coming  through so we medicated  and he was back asleep within 20 mins till 6.15 am

This is such a good run for us and I hope that it lasts a little while ( at least until 18 month sr..)
Today I did nap at 12.15 pm and he woke after 1hr 20. So happy with that too:) that might be all he needs for the moment with 12 hr plus nights.

Anyhow, gro clock and lots of outside time for slightly longer naps plus ebt  ( which he never tacked on with on 2 naps) , all seem to be working :)
Ill keep you posted :)
