4 month old rolling during naps
« on: August 27, 2013, 22:27:20 pm »
Hi all,
My little boy started rolling this week, he goes down great for his naps, then twenty minutes in starts to roll over, he wakes up VERY upset. I roll him back over and calm him, and 5 minutes later he does it again. This continues all of naptime, and occasionally at night. Help!

Hi! I just looked at your picture and I can't believe how much your DS looks like mine! Very cute :-) He's also 4 mths, but hasn't started rolling yet. I'm sorry I can't offer any real advice, but have your tried two rolled up towels or wedges beside him to keep him in place? It may be more of a solution for a younger baby, but maybe it's a temporary fix and you can work on getting him more comfortable with rolling/his tummy during playtime, and then take the wedges away in a few weeks and see if its still an issue? Good luck!
Jess

Hey there. Is he swaddled? if so you might have to wean it if he is rolling. To some extent sleep disturbances are inevitable with developmental leaps as it's just so exciting to practice those new skills! However, I did find that my guy was less inclined to practice at nap/night time if he wasn't undertired. Do you want to post a couple of days routine for us to have a look at see if we can suggest? The other things alot of people find helps is making sure they have plenty of time to practice new skills during their awake time.

He is not swaddled, and rolls over rolled up blankets. I will give him some more floor play time for him to practice and see if that helps... His routine is pretty solid 4 hr schedule-

8-wake up and eat
9:50- nap
12- eat
2-nap
4:15-eat
6- 45 min cat nap
7:15- eat
7:45- sleep

5ish night feed and back to sleep.

Thanks for the help!

How long are his naps? Are they the full 2/2:15 or does he wake earlier?

He usually wakes up after 30-40 minutes and I flip him back over, every few minutes for the next 30, then he finishes sleeping pretty solid at the end. Yesterday he didn't fall back asleep at all though, for both naps. And kept waking up rolling all night long! (He never wakes up at night  :( He always woke up into his naps though, just required a little pat and he would be back off to dreamland.

Could he do with an increase in his awake time do you think? Have you had a look at the link below?

Average A times- BOOKMARK ME!

We found that we could usually resettle overtired naps but if little one woke up earlier because he wasn't tired enough to sleep longer resettling was a no go! Can he roll back over himself ? Is so I might try and avoid doing it for him so that he starts to learn how to make himself comfortable. Does he ever resettle on his front? Any discomfort going on? Teething? Reflux?

He can flip back over by himself, but I can't bring myself wait to let him figure it out during naps because he screams like he is being tortured when he wakes on his back... I have been keeping him up longer today and he is much easier to resettle when he wakes, falling right back asleep for the rest of his nap. Thank you so very much!
