Toddler listening to music to sleep
« on: September 19, 2013, 21:07:27 pm »
Hi, since my lo was about 4 months old we've had a music box on her cot, by pressing it on plays lulabys for 5 mins with a lightshow. As she got older on the rare occasions if she ever woke in the night would switch it on + go back to sleep she very rarely calls for us + is always happy to go dwn for naps + bedtime. Just recently I've been worrying if it could be over stimulating her + she will keep clicking off then on again as her favourite song comes on first. We used to click it on for her at bedtime then turn lightshow off but recently has got really upset if the lights not on so not sure if she wants it on because of not liking the dark. Really worried I'm creating a bad habit keeping it + that she's not going to go to sleep without music when she gets older.
She's still in her cot at mo so when she moves to toddler bed will prob have to get rid of it then.

Just wondered if anyones is in the same situation or has been.x

No experience of the same but my toddler would find that much too stimulating. I would either move it out of reach so she can't keep pressing the buttons, or just remove it and accept that there will be a few rough nights. You could just get a normal nightlight for the 'afraid of the dark' issue (orange/yellow light better than blue/green).

When our girls were smaller they had "bedtime CD's" that we burned from some of my Music Together CD's, and we put them on and they'd fall asleep to the music - no lightshow, just the music on a player in the dark. Sometimes I might play some quiet New Age or classical guitar for the same basic effect, to help them relax, and it made a great sleep cue for when we traveled and were in a different place for bedtime. Neither of them uses the music now, but for a few years it was nice - they'd even help DH pick tunes to include, and for Christmas we made some Christmas-y ones. Just another option.

Thanks for your replies. Well I've decided to take it off as I really don't think its helping her sleep now. She woke in the night last night asking me to put it on when she does it herself I think its just all excuses now + I think she's too busy looking at the light to go to sleep too.
I've set it on for 10mins with the light off. I did have lots of kicking off at 1st. Took 30mins during night to sleep with me going in a few times + same tonight but after just 20mins tonight is all quiet.
She's going in a toddler bed soon so really want to sort it.x
