One side feeding or two?
« on: September 10, 2013, 07:49:21 am »
I have been feeding on one side since DD was born, but since the 3 months growth spurt I am in the habit of offering the other side too.  DD is feeding from the 2nd side, but often spits up quite a bit afterwards.  If I dont offer the other side she gives me a confused "I'm still hungry look"! (unless that's in my mind!) so I end up putting her on again.

I worry that she is not staying on the first side long enough and wants to move to the second side because it's easier to drink foremilk than work for the hind milk and would like to go back to one side feeding again.

Just wondered what everyone else does?

We did double sided feeding from early on and sometimes they would take the second side and sometimes not or just a little bit. A that age mine would have spent about 6-8 mins on the first side and 2-3 on the second side.

How long is she spending on each side? How often is she feeding?

Some women do find that if they've been single side feeding for a while that there comes a point where they need to offer the second side as well, for one reason or another.

Have you thought about doing some Breast compression to keep her interested in the first side and get some more of the fat molecules moving before offering the second side if she still seems hungry?

Just want to say thank you for these replies, so good to read, I am mainly back to feeding on one side now, though DD seems to prefer one side to the other and ends up spending less time on the not so good side and a few minutes no the favourite side to finish off.

Just wondering, the health visitor was here when baby was crying the other day(I think she was too hot, she had an extra layer on and calmed down when I took her outside), and I told her I didnt want to feed her to calm her down because she was fed an hour ago so couldnt be hungry.  She said she might be thirsty.  ??? Does anyone feed because they think LO is thirsty? It wasnt a hot day...

Where in the world are you?  It is always possible for a LO to be thirsty and need a drink (of breastmilk, obviously) in the same way an adult is thirsty between meals.

Was she suggesting giving water?my GP did.
Also told me though that the benefits of BFing were
v questionable,so i'll let you draw your own conclusions!

Interesting is a nice way to describe her!

My sister-who was with me at the time-took her on
goodo&spouted back all the things i knew but was too
sleep-deprived to remember!

I never really distinguished between hungry/thirsty if i'm honest.
If i thought from her cues that it was BM she needed, that's what she got, kwim?! :)

I'm in England. Crickey Happy, some of the advice you get...!
My health visitor meant BM rather than water, but I was dubious becuase she'd had a good feed only an hour before.
Also if I offer LO a drink for thirst she just keeps going and has a full feed.

On hot days my LO feeds more than usual. I guess she's thirsty like I get in warm weather. I'm pretty sure your BM changes in composition on hot days too (is that right Amanda?). So it's a bit more watery?? I wouldn't worry that you can overfeed her.

Oh I always offer both sides too. She doesn't always take especially in the MOTN where she usually just feeds from one side. I just try to follow my lo's lead so if she's popping on and off or if her sucking pattern changes. These boobs are quite amazing! ;D

Yes they are amazing!  I should let LO take the lead and try not to be routine obsessed all the time, always a challenge for me!  She does throw it up again if she has too much so I agree no need to worry.

You've got it, Nicola :)

And yeah, the UK's not exactly steaming hot right now, so if she'd had a good feed within an hour she was most likely grizzling for some other reason, I would imagine.

Yes,the "medical" community around me was next to
useless for my entire BFing experience.
If it wasn't for the sound advice of the ladies on this
site, things would have been v messed up.

It took me a while to trust that my LO knew what she
was doing re BFing!i like to be in control of things!so
Letting her do her thing was a big release for me.
We found that, after a MOTN feed,if DH couldnt settle her,she
needed more.the more i learned from her,the less that happened though, kwim?
