Any suggestions please on routine tweaking? 10 month old...
« on: October 03, 2013, 10:55:09 am »
So we have just moved from a hot country with permanent air conditioning back to Europe  ;D  Hello seasons!!!

Our LO who is just gone 10 months is still adjusting but prior to our move ALWAYS woke at 6am no matter what time we put her to bed. We tried different times but in the end stuck with the 7-7.30pm bedtime. However, since we have moved a week ago, she is now waking between 7am - 7.30am YAY lie in bliss! Im hoping its due to the mountain air and hopefully will stay like this!!!

However, Im having a tricky time trying to figure out her naps. She will do 4 hours activity time in the morning so if she wakes at 7am, her first nap will be about 11am. She will generally sleep for 1.30  - 2 hours on her first nap which takes us to 12.30/1pm. However, if we are putting her to bed at 7pm/7.30pm that would leave us putting her down for her 2nd nap about 4.30pm/5pm. If we do this, even for just 30 minutes, she is not tired at bedtime! I have tried to put her down before this but she is just not tired enough to go to sleep and getting her to sleep takes ages...

Any suggestions please as to how we could tweak this? She is still waking a couple of times in the night and has 1 night feed but I am starting to reduce this this week to try to wean her off it.

Any suggestions gratefully received!!!

Hi there... love your avatar (DH and I are watching star wars now for the nth time  ;D)

It sounds like she's entering the 2-1 nap transition.... where it can be a case of 2 naps are too much and 1 is not enough ::). I have attached some links for you to read through, which will explain your options. It might be a case of trial and error. We went down the path of shorter am nap (45mins) and longer pm nap. You might have to limit the am nap to 1.5hrs and APOP the catnap. It is ok for you to be on a longer day (13hrs) during the transition period.

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)
from 2 to 1 nap - how, when and the bumps

Let me know if you have any questions once you read through the links :)

We are in the same predicament right now!  I have had to move bedtime back closer to 8:30pm :(  I really don't like having bedtime so late, but in these weird in-between nap phases it's just something you have to do.

If it helps, this is DD2s schedule:

7am Wakeup
A 4hrs
S 11-1
A3hr30min
S 4:30-5:15
A 3hrs
8:15/8:30 Bedtime

HTH!

thanks ladies but is she not a little young for the transition? She has only just turned 10 months....

Maybe I jinxed myself by putting up this post as she woke at 6.15am this morning.... but that could be from overtiredness as she only had 1 nap yesterday and the day before...

They are ready when they are ready :)

DD1 was on 1 nap by 9.5months, and the schedule I posted is for DD2 who isnt even 7months old yet ;)  Every LO is different, and trying to hold them back when they are ready to transition can sometimes cause more problems!  Like trying to get her down for 7:30 while on 2 naps is just going to cause ews or nws :(  But if you adjust bedtime so shes going to bed later and more tired she may have a shorter night, but its just what you have to do until she can drop her second nap :)  You are just in the yucky, but necessary in between phase.

Yes to what Tink said... DD3 started transitioning to 2 nap at around 4.5months and that's considered to be on the younger side :). Your LO may well be too young for 1 nap but she's probably not in need of as much sleep as she was before (all this leading up to 1 nap) and so you're technically in that transition period, where you will probably have to adjust and tweak things until she's ready to go down to 1 nap. So this is where you may have to shorten her morning nap so that she's tired enough in the afternoon or you'll have to AP the afternoon nap or if you see that neither of those options are working, you will have to slowly push the morning nap (uncapped) until its closer to the middle of her day.

Yes, I would say the EW was probably from missing her pm nap and leading to some overtiredness (which is inevitable when you're in the middle of the transition).

HTHs
