Nap extending techniques
« on: November 22, 2013, 22:18:54 pm »
Hi,
My LO is 3 months old and a catnapper. But he is sleeping good at night waking up twice for feeds.
I am currently working on his naps to extend but having no success. I am using wake to sleep and if he wakes up fully trying to pat him to sleep thats seems impossible everytime and most of the time he ends up crying. Then i take him out of the room. What shud i do more to extend his naps. Any suggestions !!!

To be honest, nap extensions only worked 10% of the time for me. Wake to sleep never worked but then again, I may not have done it correctly lol. What I used to do was leave mine in the cot if she wasn't crying up to an hour from when the nap started (so if nap was 30mins, leave in the cot for another 30; if the nap was 45mins, leave in the cot for up to 15more mins) and sometimes she would put herself back to sleep :D. If she started crying and it wasn't a mantra cry, I would try and resettle with shh/pat. If she was just quiet, I'd let her hang out there (even if she didn't fall asleep) and then get her up and move on with our day and do some more A before E was due.

How long is he awake for before he goes down for a nap. It could be that he needs more (or less) A... or it could also be just developmental.

Great though that he is sleeping well at night :D

Also, I really like this post short naps at 3-4 months? Take it easy, it will get better! - just know you're not the only one struggling with short naps and it is quiet common for babies to do short naps until they drop to 2 naps  :-*

Thnx Layla for your reply. His A time is mostly 1.20 to 1.30 hrs. I am confused about when to put him down. He has no sleep cues mostly. M just following the average awake time for his age. M not following EASY bcoz of his short naps. Everyday is different. But his bedtime is same everyday. Hopefully it'll get better soon. He has been like this since he is 6-7 weeks.

It will get better soon :-*. Short naps are very frustrating... try resettling but don't try too hard. If you see that he's not going to go back to sleep in 15-20mins of resettling, it is ok to move on with the day. It doesn't help that they get so overtired by the end of the day - I used to carry Jennifer around in a sling from 4pm onwards as otherwise she was miss cranky pants. She would take the last 1-2 catnaps in the sling..gave her and I a break  ;)
