30 min nap throwing easy routine out- what next?
« on: November 19, 2013, 11:59:31 am »
I cannot seem to get my lo past 30 main per nap. So I go in and shush pat in crib after waking and pick up to shush pat when that doesn't calm her. After 40 mins of crying leading to hysteria I took her out the room, kept things calm then tried again. Still no sleep. Tried at this point to feed in case she was hungry but nothing.

So of course she got tired an hour later meaning I needec to put her down well in advance of the next sleep slot thtowin the routine out. Really need some help as don't see how we can vraj this....

Initial putting down time was 8.45, next nap time 11.35. She is five months. She does settle well at the beginning of her nap. I have been sticking with shush pat  as she didn't seem to cope well with pupd.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there and welcome,

Would you be able to post your EAS for us, how long after she wakes up are you attempting the nap. Is she an independent sleeper?

Hi I posted before but it lost my reply. Thanks for responding. I will try to remember yesterday's pattern but its hard cis every day is different depending on length of nap

E 7.15
A
S8.45 20 mins!!

E 10.15
A
s 11.30? 30 mins. Think we maybe tried another around 1

E 2
A
S4 4O mins

E 5
A

S 7.30 after a bath and feed. We stick to old routine here.

She is breastfed so often can't go four hours between feeds.

At 5 months, you can probably look at adding more A - the av is around 2.5hrs, some do more and some less. It might be that she's not tired enough to sleep longer because his A is short. We worked on 1 A at a time and we added 10-15min increments every couple of days so if she's only used to being awake for 1.5hrs, you wouldn't jump to 2.5 right away... try working on it slowly. Also, when she wakes, I would leave her in the cot to see if she will put himself back to sleep. I found that was the best way for my DD to learn - of course, if she's crying and its not a mantra cry, you would go back to him and try and resettle her. Does she go to sleep independently?

With regards to feeds, I would try and stretch her to at least 3.5hrs. My LO is also breastfed and was on 3.5hrs for a long time. When we went to 2 naps around 5-5.5months, she started sleeping better during the day and subsequently her feeds extended to 4hrs.

Hi this morning I have tried to put her down 10-15 mins later than normal for her first nap. She fought it more than normal but is asleep at the mo.

As the Day goes on I'm nor sure she could manage 2.5  A time when she has only had 20-30 main sleep. Think this is what I am struggling with. At beginning if the day she can go 3-3.5 hours between feeds but as day goes on she seems to get more hungry!

Yesterday she wouldn't have the last nap if the day at all!

Ps regarding independent sleep she seems to go down pretty well following the four S's and I don't feed her to sleep any more. But when she wakes 20 min-30 main from her nap that is where the problem starts. I can see her dropping off as I shush her but ten she jerks away and cries then its very hard to settle her again.

How are you going with stretching her A's. If she's only had a short nap, then you wouldn't keep her up for the full A... although some babies can do full A on just a short nap but with us, a nap about 30mins in length would be approx 15mins off the average A (mine was one of those who could do full A on 45min nap). A nap of just 20mins in length, I would probably take 30mins off the full A.

With regards to the feeds - its normal for them to want to cluster feed in the evening. Stretching feeds can be tricky (just as stretching A's) - so go slow and just 10 mins every couple of days until she gets used to it.

I seem to be having a similar problem. How have you got on with extending the A time?
