Still hungry or just the dreaded 45min issue?
« on: December 12, 2013, 18:53:07 pm »
Hi

Can't believe I am back here... used EASY with my first born with great success but feel like I am starting over again with second son!

So he was a big baby and has been topped up with formula since birth. Was a good sleeper until last week or so, and is getting overtired and into a nasty cycle. Feeding about every 2.5 / 3 hours depending on naps.

So what I can't decipher is whether he is still hungry as after 45min-hour bfeeding he is still licking his lips/rooting when I put him down to sleep. Won't take a bottle (does when he is hungry) but then wakes up at 45mins and is nearly impossible to get back to sleep without holding him. Or sometimes I give in and feed him if its approaching 2.5hrs mark.

As I write this it seems obvious that he is hungry, but I suppose I am not convinced this is the root of the problem.

Usually put him down after 1hr / 1hr15 of A and he puts himself to sleep easily.

As of 5/6pm he starts to cluster feed then from about 7/8pm passes out until about 2/3am when he wakes for a feed. SO he can stay asleep.

Any insight or thoughts would be much appreciated... Everything Ive been advised has worked before!!!

Many thanks in advance

How old is he?  What's a typical day look like, routine-wise?

Sorry to forget the obvious!

10 weeks old and typical day starts at 630/7am

E - 630-  7
S - 715
E - 845am for about 45min-1hr everytime
S - 10am
and so on...

Then about 5/6pm he cluster feeds over 2hrs and will not sleep....then he gets about 120ml of formula then he crashes out until 2/3am for another feed then back to sleep till 630/7am

Thanks

It could well may be developmental but there is a chance that he is ready for a bit more A time. IIWY I would increase it by 10min and stick with for a few days to see if it makes a difference.
I actually doubt that he is still hungry after feeding for 45min. It sounds like he is more using your breast as a paci to stay calm while awake.
I don't think he *should* manage 3h between feeds, because not all babies manage that (my LO was FF and didn't manage it...) but I don't think he is hungry withing 45min.
