How do you give your solids?
« on: December 10, 2013, 18:00:53 pm »
The doctor says to give solids first then follow with formula. But I know some people do it the other way around. Can you tell me how you do it and your rationale. Thanks

We did formula first, then solids about an hour later.  My rationale is that milk is the base of their nutrition until 1yr so you don't want them to fill up on solids and refuse milk after.

How old is your little one? Milk intake is the most important up until 12 months so generally milk is given first so they don't fill up on solids.

Yep, we've been giving milk first and then solids 45mins to an hour after. My dd is almost 6mos and we've just started.

My LO is 6 months and we just started as well. I started with solids first, but she was refusing the formula layout so I switched. Now, she is not taking as much formula nor eating a lot of solid. But she is sleeping through the night. So I guess I shouldn't worry.???

As the others said, food is for fun before one so I shouldn't worry. The solids may be interfering so just keep to small amounts and keeping it in the middle of your A time is a good idea so that she's ready for her next milk feed at the right E time.

I think most LOs seem to start taking more solids at about 9-10mos as they may drop a milk feed. I'm not FFing so I don't really know about how many feeds/amounts etc! Oh and enjoy the STTN! I am dreaming of that!!!

I guess by biggest concern is that she is not taking enough solids and has dropped her formula intake. She is overall taking about 20oz of formula and about 1 jar of baby food stage one. But the again the max that she even took was about 25oz. Does that seem enough for you?

At this age both my lo's were taking about 30-32oz - DD had 4 milk feeds a day and DS still had a DF so he had a bit more.
Is she having a jar of food once a day or more?

At this age like pp's have said always give milk first before solids and tbh if she is dropping her milk intake then I would cut back on the solids. DD did not start until 7 months and was not properly eating meals until more like 8months  - the milk is the most importantx

Just to say I would probably cut back on the solids a little too. My DD didn't start dropping her milk intake until about 9 or 10 months and we were well onto three sold meals a day plus a snack or two.
