breastmilk recipes?
« on: February 26, 2014, 04:06:30 am »
I am about to throw away a lot of frozen BM. DD3 won't drink it out of a bottle and she won't drink it out of a cup either. I started pumping and storing as I thought I was going back to work but I've been able to extend leave and will be home for another month and by then we will probably be down to 2 feeds, both of which I can do as I'll be at home at those times. So, are there any fullproof recipes I can use the milk for before I throw it away :(

TIA

oooh we went through this. Basically anything that requires milk.
I made lots of mini pancakes which I froze and some bechamel sauce which I froze too and then upon defrosting just added cheese or mushrooms or dill to make different sauces for DD.

I was also going to suggest pancakes but as Eva said any recipe with milk would work.

Does she have cereal you could use it on? What about making semolina or rice pudding?

Will she drink it from a sippy or open cup? What about if you make fruit smoothies out if it?

I'd go with cereal too. I heard that heating it would break the proteins in it? But I'm guessing if that's an alternative to dumping it, I'd heat!

OH NO!! Don't throw it away... It brakes your hart, doesn't it?
There are breast milk banks that you can donate to for woman who have problems BF or babies that are left in the hospital etc.

Check it out where you live before throwing out!!
Maybe even post on facebook (or the like) if anyone knows of someone who can use breast milk for a baby.
You never know...

Good luck  :D

Thanks ladies so much for your suggestions  :-*. She's actually a little bit stuffy at the moment so I've been putting some drops of BM in her nose as I've heard that's meant to clear them and I did it when she was a newborn and it worked!

It does break my heart, especially since it was expressed with a manual pump and took me what felt like forever to gather as much as I did...but I can't believe how daft I am...I am going to try pancakes tomorrow morning since she loves eating pancakes ;D

Quick question...now that I have thawed it and say I will use it for cooking, is it ok to freeze the food again?

Happy- that is a cool idea...I'll add a little to her bath tomorrow  ;D

I dont know the official answer but I would refreeze after cooking. it is ok to do with all other food as far as I know so why not breast milk? you would freeze meat that had been frozen after cooking it wouldn't you? Breastmilk is actually very robust and although I wouldnt recommend doing it JIC one study has show that refreezing thawed breast milk actually didnt lead to dangerous levels of bacteria.http://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/frozen-milk-power-outage/

The composition of the milk will definitely be affected by heating but is still worth using for the vitamins and nutrients that may not be affected.
