EBF 15 min feeds? Too quick?
« on: April 20, 2014, 16:57:18 pm »
My lo is 3 weeks and for the last week seems to feed for 15 mins, sometimes 20 mins at a time, she has a very strong suck and I have fast let down, she seems to drain boob well in that time, it will go from hard to soft and squishy in that time and she'll sleep from 2 - 3 hours after at night (but seems to only sleep 1-1.5hrs when she wakes at 6am ish.

Anyway, my question is do you think she should feed longer, easy puts E time at up to 45mins..but she just isn't interested, sometimes she falls asleep and other times she I'd awake and no amount if pushing my nipple around her mouth makes her want more!

Sounds fine to me. My DD only ever took 1 boob and by 6 weeks took only 5 mins. DS is and always has been usually more like4 mins each side sometimes only one side around 5-8 mins. I've a v fast let down too. He was poorly in hosp at 10 weeks and wd only take short feeds 1-3 mins they were v worried about dehydration but as I was engorged and fast let down he was actually fine every 2 hrs on that!

Sounds fine to me too :) she has probably just become a more efficient eater. My DD only nurses one side at a time and for a few minutes but she's gaining weight fine so no one is worried. Do you offer both breasts? If she's gaining weight, is happy, and has good pee/poop output, I wouldn't worry :)

Thanks for the reply, good to know maybe she's just very efficient! She has very very heavy nappies and poos throughout the day and night, she also put on 1lb by two weeks old and never lost, so she's obv getting calories and maybe is just a chunky monkey! :-)

Yay for a chunky monkey! Just wanted to add, sounds a lot like my DD, VERY efficient eater right from the start but the right # wet diapers and so on. Enjoy your new LO!

Sounds like you have the gold top milk! ;D

I agree it sounds like you and she are doing great. My DS1 took 45mins to feed for the first few weeks but eventually made it down to 8 mins. My DS2 never really went over 10 mins and was down to 6 mins very quickly.

Mine took an hour the first two months, was about ready to throw the towel in on BFing.
So well done baby and mama for catching on so quick:)
