11mo Early Wakes - 2-1 Transition
« on: April 26, 2014, 13:14:30 pm »
Hi,

My last post was about early wakes and here I am again!

Our EASY looks like this:

WU 6am (well that's the goal but it's been 5:30 to 5:45 recently)
Nap 9:15-9:45
Nap 1:15-3:15 (some days he'll only sleep 1hr 40min other days I'm waking him after 2 hours)
BT 7pm

We were doing basically this same easy but with a 3 hour first wake time and 45 minute nap for about 8 weeks. But then he started to take ages to fall asleep for both naps (clapping his hands and playing in cot), so we bumped the first wake time to 3hr 15min and cut the nap from 45 minutes to 30 minutes. He was early waking for a few days before that change and it's been 5 days now and he's still early waking.

He doesn't seem to be teething too badly and he falls asleep independently (usually) for naps and BT. He wakes happy in the morning and sings to himself until we go in around 6 or 6:15.

He's almost always in a good mood and not clingy etc, but has looked really really tired before 2nd nap. We've tried putting him down for second nap a touch earlier but he'll fight it until he's been awake for 3hour 30 minutes.

Do you think he just needs a few more days to get used to the cut in the first nap or could he be OT? Again, his mood is fine but he looks tired after first nap. Should I keep trying to pull his second wake time back so that first wake time is 3hours 15min, second is 3hours 15min, and third is more like 4 hours or even a touch more? Could it be that his last wake time isn't long enough? He does sometimes fight BT and sing to himself or play around for 15-20 minutes before dropping off. He looks tired at the end of the day but doesn't look OT to me.

Thanks for your help!

Have you tried increasing his A time before bed? LOs usually end up with 13.5-14hr days before they are ready to transition to 1 nap.  I wouldnt push the first A until he is not sleepy after the short am nap, or refusing am nap :)

Thanks Tinkerbell. He's never been one to refuse naps altogether... just hangs out until he's ready to sleep. So I'm happy with the first A of 3hrs 15. He now goes to sleep right away like he always has done.

I'm experimenting today with shortening his second A time from 3 1/2 hours to somewhere between 3hrs and 3hrs 15min. That would have the double effect of increasing his last A time. Working today as he went down pretty easy and it's been nearly 2 hours and he's still asleep!

I didn't realize that LOs end up with +13hour day prior to the 1 nap transition. That's so helpful to know! Maybe we can try to keep him up till 7:15 or 7:30 and see if that causes him to sleep in later. Only thing that makes me nervous is that typcially he's happier when he's had at least 11 hours night sleep. 10 1/2 hours and he's not as cheerful the next day... Hmm. Would it alternatively work to wake him up 1 1/2 hours into his second nap? So force him to keep the same 7pm bedtime but make up some day sleep at night?

Not sure if all that make sense!

Yes, that does make sense.  DD2 was down to 1.5hr am nap and 20min pm nap before she made the transition.  It is eefinitley an option to cut that long nap to 1.5hrs if you want to bt reasonable and let him get some more night sleep.
