almost 8mnth old refusing all solids now--plllls help
« on: April 25, 2014, 14:52:32 pm »
hello everyone :)

My little boy is about 8 mnths old and has been having purees since 5.5mnths. In the beginning he ate basically anything i would make and puree for him. However, in the last month this little boy has a fit EVERY SINGLE TIME i try to spoon feed a pureed meal to him.
I tried giving him chunks of food thinking he wants to do it himself, but he just gags on everything that is not pureed even on things such as grains of rice!!

I'm totally lost and frustrated. pls someone help !

Perhaps he would like to self feed with the spoon? You can load it and let him take it to feed himself? I never fed my LO, but I did hand him loaded spoons.  I imagine a grain of rice is harder to manipulate in his mouth than a large baton of solid food...
Forgive me for copy and pasting but there was another very similar thread...

Some LOs don't like the stage between puree and regular foods so mashing or cutting small might not be the right approach for your LO. How about trying large, adult finger sized pieces of fruit, veg, toast, meat, rather than mashed?  Larger pieces are easier to pick up and easier to grasp, think of half the food being held in a fist grip whilst the other half pokes out the top to be eaten, this way LO has more control of getting it to his mouth.
It also helps to see you eating exactly the same thing so he gets the idea of what to do and hears your 'yum' sounds so knows it's good.  But otherwise don't panic, just keep offering.  You might find it easier to offer some thing suitable from the family meal rather than preparing lots of different things just for him to then feel your efforts are wasted.  I made changes to how I cooked the family meal, chopped veg larger, cooked without salt, things like that.
There are lots of ideas listed here

You could just start with steamed carrot batons or oven baked sweet potato wedges/fingers, fingers of toast or pitta/naan bread etc.  Also don't be worried about having no teeth, LOs gums are amazingly hard and they can gum away at just about anything. Mine never had puree at all, at 6 months he happily gummed and sucked away on a piece of roast beef along with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and veg etc. During teething many LOs even like something hard to gnaw on as it can offer relief, mine liked hard sugar free biscuits and bread sticks when teething.

I don't know how long it's been going on, but could he be teething or coming down with a cold?  That can really affect feeding.  Another thing to maybe try regarding self-feeding is one of those mesh self-feeders where you can put a chunk of food in it for your LO without worrying about them choking.  My DS1 was about older (I think 9-10 months) but it was like one day he just refused to be spoon fed and it was finger foods from there on.  Another idea would be to give him some finger foods to eat and then sneak in some spoonfuls when you can.  :)
