Short day time naps messing up EASY schedule
« on: May 27, 2014, 14:38:32 pm »
My son is now 10weeks old and has an older sister who is nearly 2yrs.  I am struggling to get him to nap in the day as I am unable to spend the time on settling him.  It is just not safe to leave my daughter unattended.  I usually achieve just one decent sleep in the day for him and the rest are just cat naps of 30-45mins (at best).  He is pretty grumpy by the end of the day but is still great at sleeping at night and goes down at 7pm no problem.  My main question is what do I do about his feeds if he is napping for such short periods because I am not doing EASY otherwise I would be feeding him really frequently, so am doing more like, EASAEAS.  Not much Y with 2!

Also any advice on improving his nap given I am unable to spend the recommended time on settling him, also he will not sleep in his pushchair or stay asleep in the car seat once the car has stopped.

Hi, if you LO is only 10w and sleeping well at night I wouldn't worry about one longer and two short naps. It is early days and maybe a little bit too early for sleep training. Most babies at this age are not even sleeping through the night yet. I would wait a little bit and see in 1 month time.
If he can sleep more then one cycle in one nap (you said he gets one decent nap) and it doesn't seem too difficult to transition from one cycle to another, then maybe this is what he needs. My DD slept 4x45 for first 4 months and then it didn't get any better :), now is almost 9 month old and still struggling with naps and wakes up at 5am. I understand it is difficult with two, I have only one and struggling.

To answer your question about the Es, you can feed anytime during A time.  Just try to keep the feed separated from nap by about 30min if possible, that way LO doesnt feed to sleep :)

I didnt start teaching independent sleep until 3.5mo. I started on a weekend when dh would be around to stay with dd1 while I spent the time settling dd2.
