7 week old very fussy at breast
« on: May 28, 2014, 19:48:58 pm »
My 7 week old son has become increasingly fussy while nursing, so much so that i think we would be better off switching to formula, as he takes a bottle so much easier. He gets a bottle for his dream feed and occasionally during the day if we are out and about, as breast feeding in public is traumatic as he is so fussy! He starts off ok, but is extremely vocal while feeding. To begin with, we thought he was only showing his appreciation :), but it can escalate to his whole body flailing while he comes on and off the breast. I can't make out whether he is frustrated because the milk is coming too fast or too slow ( I seem to have lots of milk that can spray everywhere and sometimes cause him to cough and splutter as he gets milk all over his face the poor guy!)

I don't think supply is the problem as I can express 100ml easily in less than 15 minutes and he feeds for 30 -45 minutes! He also pukes up a bit afterwards which makes me think he is full. Am I just not winding him enough? When I wind him, he gets upset because he wants to keep feeding! Is he just frustrated because the bottle is easier than the breast? Breast feeding was well established before we introduced the bottle and there didn't seem to be any issue switching from one to the other.  To be honest, I don't think I can go back to exclusive breastfeeding as I find it so exhausting I don't think I could handle that extra df, as that's when I sleep!

Any advice?

Thanks

There are some great tips here for dealing with a forceful letdown and oversupply issues. Oversupply and Overactive (Forceful) Let-Down

Also since you mention he is fussy and spits up have a look here and see if you think reflux could be to blame.

Do you think he has developed a bottle preference? Are you using the slowest flow teat/nipple?There are some tips here for coaxing baby back to the breast. Is my baby weaning or is it a nursing strike?
