Single sided feeding for newborn?
« on: June 16, 2014, 08:02:00 am »
Just after some experiences/advice.  DS is just two weeks, latched on and fed really well from the start :D. He feeds fast - done in 10 mins - with plenty of wet and dirty nappies and for the most part going 3h in the day and up to 4h at night.  I've been offering both sides at each feed, but he is really not interested at all in the second side, possibly a couple of sucks but then just looks at me like "what are you doing?  I've already eaten!"  This happened with DD too but much later on, around 4 months or so.

Is there any issue with single sided feeding at this age?  Should I continue to offer both sides?  Or just follow his lead on this?

I'm pretty sure with both of mine I fed single sided until maybe after 3-4 months.

With both H and L I fed single sided until about four months, then started offering the second side, but only after they were done with the first.  This seems to be working / worked fine for us :)

DD1 only ever fed from one side....right from the get-go!!!!
DD2 will sometimes take a little from the second side but only recently.

great that the little man is so efficient!!!!

Same as pps, sort of 'looked at' the second side but never really stayed on long til they were bigger.  It's all the other signs you need to look for - the nappies, the contentedness, the 'what on earth are you doing?' look.  Sounds like he is thriving! Well done Ben and K!

DS now only feeds from both sides after he slept for a few hours at night. I feed roughly every 2-3 hours in the day, still. From one side usually :)

Forgot to say, that I switched from single to double sided a bit gradually.  Ie I first changed bt feed to double sided because I felt like I had less milk then and, anyway, H would take both sides.  Then during the 4 mo GS I switched all to double sided (except NFs) and so now I offer all double sided.  Except NFs are still single sided.

I'd just follow his lead.  Sounds like he's doing great :)

Also fed only on one side for the first few months.. Hamish (and i think all babies) will only really eat what they want and no more, so after a while i started offering the second side. Sometimes he'sd want it and other times not... you make sure you get the hind milk then...

Pretty sure we were single-sided the whole way through...and my DS is a tall boy, grows like a weed!

We fed single sided early on as well -- switched to double sided around 3/4 months.

Thanks everyone!  Sounds like DD was the exception, not the rule going from double-sided feeds early on to single sided at four months.  Great, we'll carry on as we are :)
