Refusing to sleep at night
« on: June 25, 2014, 06:57:05 am »
Hi guys I have a 26 month old boy.

We have a new 7 week old baby and the settling in process has been ok.

All of a sudden my son will not go to sleep straight away. He is in a cot bed so he gets out of bed and plays with his toys. Or sometimes just cries at his door. He has a stair gate at the door. I have tried not talking to him and just putting him back to bed but it doesn't seem to work. I have tried ignoring it and let him get in bed himself but that could be 8.30-9 which makes him rise earlier in the morning for example today was 5.30. Should I start the. Ed process earlier do you think? It's just hard with light bright sunny nights.

I might move him into his new room soon as it is a little further away from me and the baby so might not be disturbed by little noises. My newborn is very quiet but my two year old goes Into a very light sleep from about 5

What's his routine (WU, nap, BT) at the moment?  Although there have been some changes in his life I wonder if he could be UT at BT?

Gets up around 6.15 with a gridlock. He could wake before but I will not let him out if his room before that even if I have to stay in his room with him.

Lunch at 12
Sleep at 12.30 for an hour and a half at crèche and about 2 hours when at home,
Dinner at 4
Bed about 7.45

Currently getting closer to 8.45 before he gets in his bed and stays there

If the routine was working fine before and now you're getting BT resistance it could be time to start capping his nap a little.  Perhaps on days at home you could push it to 12.45 and still wake at 2.30 (ie push 15 mins later and make nap 15 mins shorter), and then see how that goes for a week.  You may need to push further ie 1-2.30 capped nap but I'd try the 15 mins first to see if it helps.
