15 mos early wakings post vacation- need help!
« on: July 02, 2014, 13:24:13 pm »
My 15 month old LO has been a steady 7pm to 6:30am sleeper since he began sleeping through the night (months and months ago). We went on vacation the 2nd week of June, and he woke the first day at 5:30am with a dirty diaper. I changed him but he would not go back down. He has always been a quick habit former, and sure enough, he awoke the next day at 5:30am as well (with another dirty diaper). This has continued for about 2 1/2 weeks now, except we do have the digestive system back on track so he does not wake with a poop. I tried W2S when we got home from vacation, doing it 10-15 minutes before the 5:30am wake up. However, each time he awoke, and thus began rising at 5:15am. I consulted Tracy's book and read that  W2S at night, should be about 1 hour before the typical EW time (versus the 10-15 min at naps). I tried W2S at 4:30am and...it worked! He slept util 6am at least. However, the next day, he actually awakened during W2S at 4:30am and would not go back to sleep even with me leaving the room. After 1 more day of that, I decided 5:30am was much better than 4:30am and stopped W2S all together. However, he is tired...and needs that extra hour, and I want to help him get it. Any suggestions before I try W2S again tonight??? Any help is much appreciated!!!

He goes down entirely by himself for naps and BT. When he awakens during the night, he almost always puts himself back to sleep...if not, I can just reassure him with 1-2 sentences through the monitor and he goes back down. I do not go into the room unless I suspect a problem, as this upsets him even more when I leave the room. We have always struggled with 40min naps and before vacation had finally gotten him to nap for 1 hr 15 min...thanks to W2S. We were at a point that we were not having to do W2S anymore. That reversed on vacation as well. So now...he is getting 2 short naps each day and 1 hour less sleep each night. I tried W2S at nap yesterday...but it didn't work. He awakens with such a huge jolt and pushes up onto all 4s, even with my hands on his back. I'm going to try again today.

He is a "text book baby" but has always had a spirited streak when it comes to sleep. If I didn't go get him from the crib at 5:30am, he would stand up and cry until 6:30am. When I do go get him, he is a little fussy, and so still sleepy... Help, please! :)

Recently our EASY looks like:

5:30am Wake up- go for a stroll (he stays awake)
6:30am - bottle
7:30am- Breakfast
8-10am - Play
10am- Bottle
10-10:30am- Sit on potty and quiet play before nap
10:30-11:10am Nap
12pm- lunch
12:30-3:00pm Play
3pm Bottle
3-3:30pm- Sit on potty and quiet play before nap
3:30 - 4:10pm Nap
4:15-5pm Play
5pm- Supper
6pm Bath
7pm Bedtime

It was similar in the past, except for a longer am nap (75 min) and sleeping 1 hour later in AM.

Is he teething? Often teething causes EW, they're in light sleep when the discomfort starts to get to them yk?

I wonder if the EW and shorter naps are due to UT? - could you try to push the nap a little later and see if it encourages   a later WU and longer morning nap? - once you get a longer nap over lunch you can drop the arvo one, and in the meantime I would cap the pm nap at 20/30 mins.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have been without internet following a hurricane...so I'm just seeing your response. I'll try pushing the AM nap. The pm nap is typically 30-40 minutes, due to the habit waking at the 40 minute mark. I know he is very quick to get into a habit. I don't think he is teething now...

Thanks again for the reply!
