What time does your 3.9 year old go to bed and wake up?
« on: July 21, 2014, 07:41:45 am »
Just wondering what time your 3.9 year old goes  to bed and wakes up? Aidan was doing 7 til 7 but seems to be waking earlier. Just interested to see what others are doing!

I try to have Z in bed by 6.30/6.45 and his gro clock is set at 6.45/7 (I adjust it sometimes)

He needs an EBT once a week when I pd around 6 and he usually then sleeps in :o

Thanks Sara. Aidan never sleeps in no matter what time he goes to bed!

We aim for 7pm to 7.30am on a nap day, and 6pm to 7.30 am on a no nap day.

He is hsn and loves his bed though!

DS is as well a bit younger, but for us BT can't be later than 18:30 or we have a meltdown. He wakes up with his Groclock at 7:15, but I think he wakes up a bit earlier than that and waits for the sun.

3.5 yo. Normal night here is 7pm - 7am (wakes with lights on a timer, some times the lights wake him, sometimes he is awake before the lights but mostly the 12 hr night suits him). Occasionally EBT of 15-30 mins after a super busy day but that's becoming less now, for instance yesterday he was exhausted after a super busy/active day so EBT 6.30 but he woke 6.30am so no benefit.
I set the lights for a 30 min lie in on the weekend which he often takes (so 12.5hr night) but again sometimes he is waking before the lights, more so with age and less need for the extra 30 min sleep.

L is 3yrs 10 mos.

She was Lsn as a baby/toddler but seems to be heading to more average as she gets older.  Her sleep needs haven't really dropped much in the last year, for example.

L goes to bed between 7 and 7.30pm,  usually 7-7.15pm, 7.30 is rare.  Her sun on her gro clock is set for 7am.  I'm not sure exactly when she wakes but sometimes/often we hear her before the sun comes up (eg chatting to the toys in her bed), and she always shouts straight away when the sun comes up (so must have been watching it), so I think really she only needs about 11.5 hrs/night.

My DS is LSN and at age 2 needed 11hrs total sleep in 24hrs. That didn't change much between 2 and 5, but since 5 his sleep needs have dropped (approx 9-10hrs a night).

DS when younger needed 11.5 nights on average when he dropped the nap at 3.5 yo. After few months he went to 11 h on average and this was pretty much the same until now, at 4.5, with his sleep averaging now 10.75 h. He goes to bed at 9 pm and his gro-clock is set up at 8 am (8.30 in the weekend) and he sometimes wakes before, sometimes after.
What I notice is that his sleep is consistently between 10.5 and 11.5 h, with some odd nights at 10 or at 12, so I really have to look for the average, not for a consistent night length... this is given only by the gro-clock.

Aidan has started ignoring his gro clock and coming in to us or shouting for us at about 6.15. Always used to be 7. I'm not getting used to it! We always have got up at 7.

11.25 h is actually a pretty good night for an almost 4 yo (tables say 11.5 h for a 4 yo as average). I would work toward shifting bt a bit and see how it goes.
I would also work on him waiting for the sun in the gro-clock, so if he wakes early he does not have to wake you.

When I find Z wakes earlier and is struggling to wait for the clock I put it back earlier for a few days, and keep everything else the same. Usually he then gets ' ore tired' and sleeps later then I pop it back. Often he does this every few weeks or month as I notice he has a lot of developmental stuff going on ATM...just a possibility?

Thanks Sara I'll try it. This has been going on for a couple of months now so will try anything. I just don't know whether this is all the sleep he needs now or not. So trying to decide if a later bedtime might eventually get a later wakeup or whether to tell him to play quietly in his room til the sun comes up rather telling him he must go back to sleep. The problem with that is that he doesn't know the meaning of the word quiet so will probably wake me up anyway!

I would try moving the gro-clock earlier for a while too, to re-establish what it signifies so he isn't expected to wait too long.

I have lights on a timer and leave books for DS to entertain himself with for 20 mins or so before I get up, maybe somethign like that cna help to stretch the time between his WU and 7am (although I understand what you're saying about him not playing quietly. Lights need to only go on or playing only allowed after the gro clock says it's morning IMO otherwise it could be any time in the middle of the night and they'd think it's ok to play - depends on the child too of course).

I notice now DS needs just a little less sleep than the last few moths and I'm aware as we move towards 4yo his sleep needs might drop further.
