6w old and stay awake most of the day
« on: September 04, 2014, 14:38:29 pm »
Hi,
For the last 3 days I have been trying to change bad habits with my DD who from her birth always slept on my arms.
The problem is that while I recognize her yawnings and puts her in her cradle before she gets over-tired, she does not sleep, and then it turns to be a cycle where she's awake for 2-3 hours, hungry again, so I breastfeed her, then she needs a diaper change, and she's still awake and not showing any sign that she wants to sleep again, though she is defently very very tired.
There's no medical problem (reflux) and I see nothing else that otherwise disturbs her, except her struggles to sleep.
I really don't know what to do to help her sleep while not caring her in my arms. I tried a lolly-by, gentle strokes, pats and shhhh. nothing helps!
What do I do?     ???  :-[

Congratulations on your little one!  It's always a confusing time when they're so little.  To be honest, don't worry one bit if she needs to fall asleep in your arms.  6 weeks old is very very young.  If you're able to help her fall asleep and then are able to transfer her to the crib, great.  If not, that's ok too.  We typically encourage parents to hold off until baby is 12 weeks old before earnestly beginning sleep training because there are so many changes to deal with.  At this point, there is nothing you cannot undo in the future.
