Refusing naps at 2 1/2 yrs old
« on: September 11, 2014, 21:25:21 pm »
My almost 2 1/2 yr old has never missed a nap since we started EASY at five months. Yesterday and today he went to bed ready for a nap and never fell asleep. Yesterday he wet the bed and today was dry but super chatty. He is heading into a cold but seems tired; this is so new! He's even been asking for "ni-ni" a lot lately. He really needs his rest as he is sick/getting sick!

Please tell me this is only temporary and normal at this age.

He is currently at a 5 1/2-6 hour A time.

Maybe you can try increasing his A time to 6.5hrs. My boy is 31months and started acting up at nap time at 27months. I increased his A time to 6.5-7hrs and it has been helping. He has always been a low on A times too.

Great suggestion!!!!  Should I wait to increase the A time until after he is feeling better?

Thank you!

Hi! We had a crazy sleep regression type thing around 27m. It was completely out of character and I was pretty sure that R was not ready to drop the nap (and she wasn't - still naps!).

We preserved with our usual routine but only on the basis that my gut feeling was it want a routine issue, more developmental. Once the stage had passed (a few weeks for us), I then re-evaluated the routine.

I would wait till he is well again before changing things up. I nearly went bonkers with DS between 27-29 months. Went from dream sleeper to screaming and crying. It did not help that he started 2 hours of play school then too. It just put in more variables.

I got so desperate that I even started playing ocean waves and forest sounds in my car to chill him out on our drive back from play school :D Worked for a day or two and back to nonsense again. I finally gave up when Hena wrote her DD had a developmental blip then too. I just kept being consistent and voila, he went back to normal at 29.5 months and started making sentences like crazy! But his A time did require an increase too as he kept waking at 45mins crying. Not tired enough to transition but too tired to wake up happily.

So yeah, let him get better and then evaluate again.

Very, very interesting ladies! He was feeling a bit better so we pushed his nap back a half hour the first day and he slept great, an hour the second day (making it 6.5 hrs) and he slept like a champ again!

I really appreciate the input and I won't freak out if he has troubles over the next couple of months, as it sounds like it might be a developmental thing and normal for his age. Thank you again!!!!
