10 months old - early rising, short naps
« on: October 05, 2014, 13:58:29 pm »
Hi! I was hoping someone would be able to help me get back on track with my 10.5 month old. He wakes anywhere from 5:30-6am. Recently he has been having one night waking around 11pm that lasts about 5-15 min.  I typically give him a nap around 9:15/9:30- this can be anywhere from 30 min- 1 hr. I put him down for his next nap 3 hours later (which is usually an hour- 1 hour 20 min) And then bedtime is usually 7pm. He wakes up crying & miserable from every nap. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can change? I'm losing my mind & everything is taking a toll on me. Thanks so much in advance!

Oh I remember going through this and it was a learning curve for me.  Regarding the night wakings, does he actually cry or is it just a quick blast?  My DS did, and still occasionally does, what I call a blast cry.  He cries out, startling/waking both DH and I, and then goes right back to sleep.  It's a bit unnerving but there's nothing wrong with him (I used to always check).
Is it possible he's ready for an A time push?  I started moving my DS towards 1 nap at 11 months, it took a month and a bit and this actually solved the EW.  You know your LO best and I was a little under the gun with day care looming but it's something to consider.  HTH

It is definitely worth a try, if I'm having all of these problems anyway...but what I don't understand is, everyone tells me to hold onto 2 naps for as long as possible. When you say it took a month, what problems were you facing in the meantime?

How can I determine if he is ready for one nap?

Recently, he has been crying - I wait a minute or two to see if it is just a sleep cry but he is definitely awake , so I go in, rub his back for a second & hand him his lovey, walk out & then he goes back to sleep.

TIA Laura

Perfect!  That's exactly what you should do for NW's and you can consider yourself very fortunate.  You've obviously done a great job at help your LO learn to resettle.  DS kept doing early wakings in bits and pieces until we really nailed that one long nap during the day.  With T, I pushed him for 15 mins longer every 5-7 days, depending on how he seemed to be handling it.  Once he made it to 10:30am, he pushed himself through until 11 by just tearing around.  After that, I moved him up by 30 mins every 4 days and he just rolled with it.  I was in charge but I watched him closely for sleepy cues (getting wobbly and lots of yawns) so I sort of let him dictate how long he could go.  The one thing I would suggest is sticking with a set bed time.  DH and I kept tweaking T's bedtime by 15 mins or so, depending on how long he napped for and this really messed him up.  Once we went back to his regular BT, it was a much smoother road.
I was pretty sure T was ready because one nap would always be short and he started to get quite ticked off at nap time.  I also thought the day-care's plan for incorporating two naps was just not feasible for T's needs and so I started the transition.  He naps for 2 hrs from 12:30-2:30, sometimes a little longer if it's been a busy day, and his BT is 6:45, starting bath etc. at 6:15.
If you think your LO is fine on two naps, keep it up.  Each baby is different.  My niece is only 4 days older than my son and she still has two naps between 1-3hrs in length and sleeps 12 hrs at night.  SERIOUSLY?!  She is a VERY physical child though and is in day care 5 days a week.

Cheers,
Laura
