Do 40min naps ever stop?
« on: January 09, 2015, 16:34:03 pm »
My DD has taken 40mins naps from 1 month old, shes now 4.5 months. Ive done EVERYTHING, but i think its down to pure habit now. Shes very easily resettled (most of the time) so she eventually gets a 2 hour nap but the resettling is just a bit of a pain now.
She has an A time of 2 hours and she falls asleep herself fine so i know its never to do with that.
I also read somewhere if they dont wake at 40mins at bedtime then its just became normal for them during the day as 99% of the time she sleeps on throughout the night!
So does it ever actually stop or is this something im just going to have to live with?

I have battles with all 4 of my kids with 45 min naps. They do outgrow it!  My oldest hung on to them till he was down to 2 naps. It does get better!

We had (still have) major issues with the terrible 40 minute naps. Mainly, things started to improve when we hit on the correct A time and of course, as she got older and dropped to 2 naps. Since your LO is an independent sleeper, maybe a few routine tweaks might help. Why don't you post your routine and we could have a look? If you feel that it is habitual, you could try Wake to sleep to help her through it.

How do I address habitual wakings?  (wake-to-sleep and other methods)

Ive tried W2S - tried wakening her a bit, tried wakening her more, tried HTTJ- everything!!

My routine (shes 19.5weeks old)

E 7am (can shift half an hour in any direction)
A
S 9am-10.30 (usually sleeps past 40mins, more recently hasnt)

E 11am
A
S 12.30-2 (worst sleep- never gets past 40mins but i resettle her and she goes back over)

E 3pm
A
S 4-4.45pm

E 6.45pm
A straight to bed
S 7/7.30

No DF and no NF
wakes for dummy- around 5am and goes straight back to sleep!

She falls asleep herself- i give her a cuddle and her dummy and put her down and shes asleep within 10mins (nighttime takes konger sometimes, she can be upset sometimes but sometimes not!!)
Shes very textbook but 40min naps are never ending!!

She sounds pretty awesome! No NFs..wow! Lucky mama:P

I have 2 thoughts -
1. Since she is easy to resettle, maybe she needs a little push in A times. It is possible that she needs a bit more in order to transition

2. This is what we did -- For a week, be in the room at the transition time and when she stirs, just place a hand on her/ and if needed gently pat - basically settling her before she fully wakes. After that, we backed off totally and found that she made it through

At the end of the day though, she is just learning and it could be that naps will naturally extend as she gets older. WWYT?

Oh yeah shes brilliant baby- very easy!
Just getting her past the 40mins would mean I could do more housework- so maybe its not a bad thing she wakes haha!

I keeping thinking about increasing her A time but shes absolutely shattered by 1 hour 50mins so by 2 hours shes out!! She only made it to 1 hour 45mins this morning and was out within seconds, but she has woken at 40mins but resettled. So I just dont know how to increase!?

I havent tried HTTJ in a while so ill maybe try again with some gentle patting!

Thankyou!
