early waking and bad naps
« on: February 15, 2015, 14:17:45 pm »
Hi we have been an Is since 7 months and we are now 18month
Our daily routine was
Wu 0730 this is when I get him up but sometimes I hear chatting from 7 ish
Nap 1230-1430/1500
BT 1915 asleep by 1930-1945

Has a taggie for a lovey but no props.
Has two/three molars coming. Medicating at bedtime but not naps

The last few days naps have been shorter anything from 1hr at childminders to 1hr and half or his usual 2 1/2 hr nap plus waking earlier (0630) and going to bed with a fight later. So sometimes not falling asleep til 2000 with a lot of crying and needing us to go back in.  Also nap wise he has been waking up at 50-60 mins and then resettling himself. I have taken this to be overtired so yesterday put him down for his nap at 1145 and he slept til 2.45 and tried an early bed time yesterday of 7 and he didn't fall asleep til 8 but was unhappy unless we were in and then he was signalling to get out of the room which is his under tired behaviour.

Question is is this just teeth,  18 month sleep regression or routine issues?

Ok so last night we tried to force an early bed time after his 0630 wake up . His nap was bad too and he was yawning by half for so we tried putting him down at half five. Tacking on has worked well in he past but It didn't go well with him eventually falling asleep at 1845 by patting. He did stir at 6 am but went back to sleep and woke at 7 ish.

Thoughts anyone?

Hi there, sorry you haven't gotten a reply yet! :-[

Boy, that's a loaded question! ;) I think it could be a little of all three! :P

It looks like he's on the HSN side, huh? My DS1 was like that and I think somewhere around 18/20mo I had to start capping his nap at 2hr. Also, because he's shortening the nap sometimes on his own and/or waking earlier, I wonder if it might be time to push it out toward 1300.

That being said, it sounds like you think he's a bit OT. I think if you're trying to catch him up, you need to pick either long nap or early bedtime. Trying to do both is likely going to backfire on you a bit as it did the other day.

Was the 6:30 wake-up after the 8pm bedtime and 3hr nap? I wonder if he's trying to self-regulate a bit. Can you keep track of your EASY for a few days and we'll see if we can find a pattern?

(((Hugs))), it's not easy when there are so many variables!!

Yes he has always been an ok sleeper and a good napper but he transitioned from 2-1 nap at about 12 months so I guess the epic 3 hr nap was always going to shrink at some point. He also plays happily in his cot so when I say he does 7.30 -7.30 he is quiet by 1930 and moaning at 0730 I can not guarantee that this is what he sleeps!
Yesterday he didn't go Down til 1250 for a nap but I let him sleep til 1530... Epic mistake  as bedtime at 1930 was a fight til 2030 when he finally went off. Today he woke me up at 0700  and went for a nap at 1100 as he was actually asking to go to bed.

So I am guessing moving him to 1300 ish for his nap (is this when o put him down or when I want him asleep by?) AND cap it to two hours tomorrow?

Who knows what will happen today now assuming he naps til 1300-1400 it'll be a 7 ish bedtime I guess or would u do set times now?

Ok so last night he finally fell asleep at 2030. Woke up this morning at 7 am. Nap 1100-1400 and into bed 1915 no Complaints. Let's see what the morning holds although we have to wake him tomorrow  if he isnt up by 0645 as he is at the childminder so maybe not a true refelction

Yes, I think he's having a tough time regulating nights with the long naps. It's hard when teeth are in play as sometimes you may need a catchup nap, but that should be the exception not the rule.

I do think set times are very beneficial from now on. Of course, there will be days when he's ill when you'll need to go by cues, but otherwise you want to stick pretty close to the set times. If he's had a rough night from teething, you can put him down 30min early, but I'd try not to go farther than that.

Hope you get a good wake up tomorrow!

Great thanks so yesterday he did 1100-1400 then went to bed at 1915 no issues. Woke at 3.30for a quick cuddle and then back to sleep. Was awake by 0645.

Childminder today and he slept 2 hrs so we shall try and sort it out next week as away this weekend typically. Thank you we shall try the set times of 1pm -3 pm and 1915
